For an island as diverse as this Dutch-Caribbean gem is, working out where to stay in Curacao is generally easier said than done. While I’ve already covered the best diving resorts in Curacao for all the human-fish out there, there’s more to see and do on the island beyond the diving scene.

Plus, although the island is relatively small, the neighborhoods are quite varied; just measure cosmopolitan Southern Curacao against rugged Northern Curacao to see what I mean!

Fortunately, that’s where this handy Curacao hotel guide comes in. Whether you’re seeking a stimulating stay in the island’s Instagrammable capital of Willemstad, a nature retreat away from the crowds in Westpunt, or something in between, the perfect Caribbean getaway awaits. Here are the best areas to stay in Curacao for your individual travel style.

One of the most popular areas to stay in Curacao is undoubtedly Willemstad. As the island’s capital and the heart of the action, it’s no wonder many first-time visitors base themselves in Willemstad, given its centralized location.

That said, it’s important to note that Willemstad is definitely not the polished and pristine city you may be led to believe it is from the colorful pictures. While it’s certainly as colorful and vibrant as you’d expect, the city is actually quite rough around the edges, from its gently cracked facades to its full-on deteriorating buildings. Frankly, I found it to be a bit “slapped together,” as though someone unleashed buckets of paint on the city in an effort to put a band-aid over the underlying issues.

And speaking of paint, are you aware of the little Curacao fun fact that Willemstad’s buildings were once white? The common theory is that the island’s governors ordered that the buildings be changed to bright colors to battle the glare from the sun!

While plenty of people seem to enjoy the rawness and up-and-coming nature of Willemstad, I personally found it surprisingly lackluster, despite all the rainbow paint.

However, it’s hard to deny the fact that Willemstad has a lot “going on” in terms of restaurants, hotels, etc. on the island.

Although many refer to Willemstad as a singular place, the city is actually comprised of four distinct quarters – the Punda and Otrabanda (separated by the Sint Anna Bay) and the more suburban-style neighborhoods of Pietermaai and Scharloo.

Here’s a closer look at the four different districts of Willemstad and what you can expect from each.

• Centralized location in the heart of the main action
• Close to many top attractions such as the Queen Emma Bridge
• Some of the best shopping on the island

If you’ve ever seen photos of Willemstad, then you’re most likely already familiar with touristic Punda, the heart of the island and one of the best areas to stay in Curacao. This centralized district is the location of the iconic Handelskade. This vibrant row of rainbow-colored buildings lines the waterfront facing the beloved Queen Emma Bridge.

Today, Willemstad’s heavily-frequented center of Punda offers some of the best shopping on the island. Punda is also home to charming and colorful alleyways as well as numerous restaurants.

If you’re looking for the ultimate luxury stay right in the heart of Willemstad, you can’t go wrong with The Yellow Penthouse. This gorgeous and modern 3-bedroom penthouse apartment is equipped with a balcony and a prime view over Willemstad and Sint Anna Bay. Plus, guests have access to an on-site hot tub for the ultimate luxury.

Blue Marlin | Famous Handelskade Apartment is a spacious, self-catering apartment option that seamlessly merges convenience with epic views. This apartment is located in one of the most coveted spots in Willemstad – within one of the iconic buildings that make up the Handelskade! You really can’t ask for a better location while in Willemstad.

Plus, the impressive terrace with unrivaled views over Sint Anna Bay makes this prime spot an absolute steal.

If you want to be in the heart of Punda without the accompanying price tag, San Marco Hotel Curacao & Casino is a suitable budget-friendly option. Plus, if gambling is on your agenda, you’re in luck (literally)! Guests can also take advantage of a casino equipped with roulette and slot machines right on site.

• Home to many impressive historic monuments
• Across the bay from Punda, providing a bit more peace
• More of a local feel than Punda

Otrabanda – which translates to the “other side” in Papiamentu – is located across the Sint Anna Bay from Punda.

History-lovers will find themselves right at home in Otrabanda, one of Willemstad’s most significant historical quarters. In fact, of the 800+ monuments located in Willemstad, around two thirds of them are located here!

One of the most popular monuments is Riffort, a 19th-century defense fortress that was built to defend the island from pirate attacks. Another key attraction is the Kura Hulanda Museum, an impressive outdoor museum dedicated to the dark history of slavery on the island.

Although many of Otrabanda’s historic buildings faced damage in years past, there’s been a great restoration effort made since then, including the infusion of a 5-star hotel village.

While I don’t typically stay at hotels within giant property groups, Renaissance Wind Creek Curacao Resort is too beautiful not to at least mention. Renaissance Wind Creek is one of the exquisite 5-star Renaissance Hotels, a luxury hotel brand under the umbrella of Marriott International. This resort provides a luxurious experience within city lines, which is no easy feat in a city as built up as Willemstad.

Guests can enjoy a dip in the salt-water infinity pool as well as the added bonus of access to a private elevated beach. The property also boasts four on-site restaurants as well as Carnaval Casino, perfect for a fun night out.

Another accommodation from a popular hotel collection, Brion City Hotel is a Best Western property. The property prides itself on being the most modern hotel on the island of Curacao, a declaration that’s backed up by ample amenities.

With a restaurant, bar, fitness center, and outdoor swimming pool, you’ll find plenty to do here if you need a respite from busy city life. Guests can also take advantage of a continental breakfast served daily.

Curacao Suites Hotel is a comfortable, affordable, no-frills hotel option located in the center of Otrabanda. Located just under a 5-minute walk from the Queen Emma Bridge, you won’t have to sacrifice the convenience of location here.

Plus, with continental breakfast, a rooftop terrace to enjoy throughout the day and evening, and the added perk of free parking, guests can enjoy a balcony suite for less than $100/night.

• Abundant street art and creative works
• Fewer hotels and more privacy than other Willemstad districts
• Ample photo opportunities

As Willemstad’s youngest and hippest colonial district, Scharloo attracts an artsy crowd. This is the district where creatives feel free to express themselves, as evidenced by the impressive street art you’ll find practically everywhere. Even if you don’t personally find this to be one of the best areas to stay in Curacao, don’t miss a visit to Bitterstraat to admire the masterpiece “Three o’ clock Romance” by Francis Sling.

There aren’t a ton of hotels directly in Scharloo, but I’ve shared two lower to mid-range options:

The Ritz Village Hotel offers comfortable studio spaces with kitchenettes. In addition to providing guests with the option to cook within their rooms, the property also includes a restaurant which serves breakfast and dinner. Plus, if you enjoy water activities, you can take advantage of the outdoor pool, jacuzzi, and on-site dive shop for all your scuba needs.

A reasonably-priced 4-star property just under a one-mile walk from the Queen Emma Bridge, Villa Amalie is a gem in Scharloo.

With a spacious terrace, garden, and a pool, this space provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor enjoyment. In addition, some rooms include the added bonus of a kitchen and a continental breakfast is provided for all guests.

• Up-and-coming Willemstad neighborhood
• Many swanky lounges and rich nightlife
• Laidback vibe

Trendy and walkable Pietermaai proves that what was once rundown and neglected can become the go-to place with a couple of coats of paint and an infusion of culture. Without a doubt, Pietermaai is where the “cool kids” hang out in Willemstad.

With colorful facades that are more than a little rough around the edges, it’s clear that this area is an up-and-coming neighborhood in transition. Pietermaai is definitely the place to be for nightlife in Willemstad with its trendy bars and lounges.

If you’re traveling as part of a large group and looking to split costs, (Princess) Sirena Bay Estate may just be the oasis you’re after. In fact, this oceanfront villa can be rented out for up to 20 guests.

Bringing the “wow” factor to Willemstad, this estate offers everything from a concierge service to a private beach. Did I mention you can also arrange for a private chef?

In addition, you’ll find an outdoor pool and a garden area; plus, the property is mere steps from Avila Beach.

Avila Beach Hotel is definitely on the upscale side of mid-range, but considering all of its wonderful amenities, it’s well worth the sticker price! As its name suggests, the property is located right on Avila Beach and offers everything from an outdoor pool to a full-service spa.

It also includes three distinct hotel wings – including the popular “Caribbean Ocean Front Blues” wing – to accommodate various needs and budgets.

Avila Beach Hotel also includes a fabulous restaurant that offers a generous buffet breakfast.

If colorful beach houses are your style, then Scuba Lodge & Ocean Suites may be just what you’re looking for!

Located in the heart of the Pietermaai district, this bright, 19th-century property offers the centralized convenience to Willemstad (as it’s located right on a city street) with the ocean just at the back.

While you can’t see most of the property’s amenities at the street level, Scuba Lodge does offer an infinity pool, a garden, and even a seafront bar.

• Tons of shops, restaurants, and hotels
• Great beaches in close proximity
• Perfect for families as well as those seeking nightlife

Jan Thiel is one of the best areas to stay in Curacao as it checks off many a traveler’s box. Ideal for families as well as those looking to enjoy exciting nightlife, this lively neighborhood offers a bunch of great restaurants, beaches, hotels, and shopping opportunities.

Papagayo Beach Resort is a modern and luxurious seafront property consisting of private tropical villas with wonderful ocean or garden views.

Located in a prime position over Jan Thiel, Papagayo Beach Resort also includes a restaurant that serves à la carte breakfast as well as a beach club that guests can access free of charge.

Beyond the resort itself, you can find plenty of fab food options just outside your villa door along Papagayo Beach Plaza.

Set along beautiful Jan Thiel Bay, Morena Resort is an eco-friendly property that prides itself on sustainable practices without sacrificing luxury.

This car-free resort includes a total of 99 apartments and villas as well as two pools – a “family” pool and a “nature” pool which provides nourishment for the hair and skin. 

The rooms feature cozy, environmentally-friendly wooden furnishings and fair-trade products.

There’s also an on-site restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a terrace overlooking the protected neighboring island wetlands.

My husband and I stayed at De Plantage Jan Thiel Boutique Resort during our time in Jan Thiel. The well-furnished, self-catering apartments are ideally located a short drive away from the main action of Jan Thiel, yet still manage to feel secluded. I was definitely feeling the “jungle vibes” here.

However, the name “resort” is definitely generous, as the property offers no amenities beyond a small pool. While there’s no restaurant (or food of any kind) available on-site, the spacious apartments offer kitchens where you can prepare your own meals if you wish.

• Tranquil surroundings
• Not overrun by tourism
• Easy access to hiking trails

If peace and quiet are a top priority, you’ll want to consider the tranquil neighborhood of Piscadera Bay. Located west of Otrabanda, this area offers plenty of natural beauty and numerous hiking trails. In addition, it’s also home to Fort Piscadera, a fascinating site of ancient ruins.

While there’s not much activity within Piscadera itself, it can be a great jumping off point for more touristed areas of the island.

The beautiful Zoetry Curacao is part of Hyatt’s exclusive AMR Collection of hotels. The 72 luxurious suites of this property offer a relaxing ambiance with spacious terraces and views of the garden or outdoor pool.

Zoetry also offers two restaurants, a bar, a fitness center, and a spa, as well as free private parking for all guests.

Set atop a hill with dreamy views, Piscadera Harbour Village is a 4-star resort featuring modern accommodations in the form of bungalows and apartments.

Just an easy, 5-minute walk from the beach and a short drive from Willemstad, you can enjoy plenty of relaxation without sacrificing convenience.

The resort also offers a large outdoor infinity pool.

Plus, guests can enjoy free access to the private Pirate Bay Beach just nearby as well as a 10% discount on breakfast at Pirate Bay Restaurant, one of my favorite restaurants in Curacao.

The Piscadera Seaview Apartments are a self-catering complex featuring a small pool, a garden area, and a terrace. Many of the apartments include a balcony, some of which offer sea views.

Plus, with full kitchenettes contained within the apartments, you can easily prepare your own meals while also remaining only a 10-minute drive from central Willemstad.

• Easy access to amazing wildlife such as flamingos, sea turtles, and wild boars
• Close to some of the island’s best natural attractions, including Christoffel National Park and Shete Boka National Park
• Gorgeous and remote beaches
  

Northern Curacao is so remote compared to Willemstad (and its surrounding areas) that you may just feel as though you’ve landed on a totally separate island. In fact, many people refer to this half of the island as the “other side of Curacao.”

However, the stark difference of the peaceful and natural north is a strong selling point for many (including me). If you prefer waking up to greenery, hilly landscapes, and the sound of tropical birds more than people, then you’ll definitely find the northern half to be one of the best areas to stay in Curacao.

While travelers tend to base themselves amongst the island’s more populated areas, many make the journey to the northern side of the island to enjoy some of the most beautiful beaches in Curacao as well as hike the spectacular Christoffel National Park. Northern Curacao is also where you’ll find some impressive waves, like those at Shete Boka National Park.

The northern half is home to the spectacularly secluded area of Westpunt, located on the northern tip of the island, as well as the sweet sanctuary of Sint Willibrordus a bit further south.

With just one look at the Cliff Villa Award Winning Luxury Retreat, you’ll understand how this gem earned its well-deserved title.

A stay at this gorgeous oasis is akin to relaxing on your own private island while still enjoying the treasures of Curacao. But don’t just take my word for it! As the recipient of the Luxury Villa Award 2001 & Beautiful Curacao Award 2022, Cliff Villa is certainly no stranger to recognition and accolades. So if seclusion is your top priority while in Curacao, you may just need to try this award-winning villa in picturesque Westpunt on for size.

Impressively located atop a small hill perched above the sea, the views at Cliff Villa are nothing short of spectacular.

Plus, with easy sea access and an outdoor pool with an enviable ocean panorama, this is the perfect property for aquatic enthusiasts.

If you like the idea of basing yourself in Northern Curacao but aren’t quite ready to take the plunge with a stay in Westpunt (or the Cliff Retreat is wildly out of budget), Coral Estate Luxury Resort in Sint Willibrordus is a wonderful compromise.

My husband and I really enjoyed our stay at this property, which is a fabulous jumping off point for many of the natural wonders we explored up north. (Plus, it’s only about a half-hour drive to Willemstad.)

Coral Estate has a ton of on-site amenities, so if you want the type of retreat where you never so much as leave the property, you’ll be covered here. With four restaurants/eateries, an outdoor pool, and a dive center/diving school, you’ll have no shortage of things to do here.

For a seaside stay on a budget in Westpunt, Marazul Dive Resort is a super affordable option. Perched on a plateau above the cerulean-blue sea, the two-story townhomes of Marazul Dive Resort are ideal for divers and/or those interested in exploring Curacao sans crowds.

Plus, Marazul is also only a five-minute drive from Christoffel National Park, so it’s ideal for hiking enthusiasts.

While there’s no restaurant on the property, there are barbecue facilities for preparing meals as well as a generous rooftop patio.

As you can see, Curacao offers a diverse array of accommodations to suit a wide variety of travel styles. While the southern end of the island is quite a departure from the northern half, you can easily commute from your home base to the opposite end of this small island in under an hour.

So whether you’re in the heart of the action or soaking up the quiet sanctuary of the desert-like wilderness, a dramatic change of scenery is just a short drive away!
