Not only is Hallstatt worth visiting, but it’s also well worth spending a night (or two or three)!

While many people opt to see Hallstatt as part of a day trip, I firmly believe this Austrian fairytale village deserves more than a quick popover. Fortunately, it won’t take much to sell you on an overnight stay once you uncover these dreamy Hallstatt hotels with lake views.

Although accommodations are limited in this tiny village, you won’t have a hard time nailing down the perfect lakeside stay in Hallstatt. Let’s pinpoint exactly where to stay in Hallstatt – from luxury lakeside hotels to cozy B&Bs.

The best place to stay in order to see Hallstatt is directly within the village center itself. Although there’s a limited number of properties in this tiny village, you’ll find a fair mix of family-friendly accommodations as well as adult-only hotels.

You’ll also have a choice between a luxurious hotel stay and a cozy, self-catering stay at a charming guesthouse or apartment.

You can most certainly swim in Lake Hallstatt, providing the weather allows for it, of course.

Ideally, you’ll want to reserve your lakeside dips for May through September, when the water temperature averages between 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit (or 18 to 22 degrees Celsius).

Yes, it’s absolutely worth spending a night in Hallstatt! In fact, I spent three nights here and was never bored, despite the village’s intimate size. 

An overnight stay offers more peace and quiet in the early mornings and evenings, before and after the typical day-tripper crowd has come and gone.

We opted to stay at one of the most popular hotels in the village – Heritage Hotel Hallstatt – and it was the best decision.

This 4-star has everything we could want – dreamy lake views, a super convenient (and stunning!) location, and all of the key amenities (with a fantastic restaurant to boot).

It’s located right along the lake, practically at the foot of where the Stefanie ferry docks. (This is the ferry that transports visitors from the train station to the center of town.)

Family-friendly Heritage Hotel is actually divided amongst three historic-yet-renovated townhouses. They’re all located within 10 minutes walking distance of each other. There are a total of 12 suites and 42 double rooms spread throughout the three buildings.

The three historic townhouses include:

1. Kainz House (the main building)
2. Stocker House (3-min walk from Kainz House)
3. Seethaler House (5-10-min walk from Kainz House)

The main building, Kainz House, is where you’ll check in and out. It’s also where you’ll find all of the key amenities I mentioned, including the restaurant and sauna. A major pro of staying directly in the Kainz House is the convenience factor, as it’s easiest to reach the restaurant for breakfast each morning, enjoy hotel amenities, etc..

We were originally given a super spacious (and gorgeous!) “suite” within the Kainz House. While I was thrilled to be situated right within the main action, the room layout was that of a giant studio apartment, which ultimately wasn’t the right fit for our family dynamic.

We much prefer having a separate bedroom and living area when we travel with our young toddler. The separation allows us to put her down for naps/bedtime without disturbing her sleep and gives us the ability to unwind and enjoy “adult time” after a long travel day.

Fortunately, the staff was very understanding and accommodating to our unique circumstances, and moved us into a true suite at the Seethaler House, free of charge.

Although our new room was more out of the way (and meant we had to walk 10 minutes outside for  breakfast each morning), it was well worth the small sacrifice for our sacred, baby-free time in the evenings.

Plus, with our spacious balcony and lakeside views, I wasn’t concerned about being separated from the main building in this more private suite!

One of the absolute highlights of Heritage Hotel Hallstatt is the wonderful restaurant.

In addition to enjoying a delicious buffet breakfast here each morning, we also dined at the restaurant twice for dinner!

Heritage Hotel Hallstatt is located at Landungsplatz 101, 4830 in Hallstatt. (This is the address for the Kainz House.)

Paid parking is available outside of town in the P1 area. From there, visitors can take a complimentary shuttle bus to the hotel.

For the ultimate luxury stay in Hallstatt, look no further than Seehotel Grüner Baum.

This 4-star hotel is unique in that it faces two totally distinct – yet equally lovely – viewpoints: Markplatz (Market Square) to the front and Lake Hallstatt to the back.

As this is one of the best Hallstatt hotels with lake views, you’ll want to book a lake-facing room if available. These are: a single or double room (or prestige double room) with a balcony facing the lake, a junior suite with a balcony facing the lake, and the superior suite.

This boutique property was fully renovated in 1992 and includes a wellness area that features a Finnish sauna and steam bath.

Although we stayed just steps away at Heritage Hotel Hallstatt, we did dine at the hotel’s restaurant, Restaurant zu Salzbaron, one evening and the food was fantastic. I enjoyed shrimp pasta and my husband ordered the wiener schnitzel.

The restaurant also features a terrace that overlooks the lake. In addition, a buffet breakfast is available each morning for guests and included in the stay.

Seehotel Grüner Baum is located at Marktpl. 104, 4830 in Hallstatt.

Paid parking is available outside of town in the P1 area. From there, visitors can take a complimentary shuttle bus to the hotel from 9AM until 7PM.

Intimate Seewirt Zauner is an adults-only property located in charming Markplatz (Market Square). This lovely property features a dozen rooms that offer lake or mountain views.

Seewirt Zauner was lovingly renovated in 2014 to include modern elements such as satellite tv amidst a traditional hotel atmosphere.

One of the highlights of this boutique property is the dining experience at Seewirt Zauner Hotel Restaurant.

It offers regional delicacies like fresh fish from Hallstatt Lake and organic meat from surrounding Salzkammergut.

While breakfast isn’t served directly at the property, guests can opt for a breakfast service option which is available at a neighboring hotel for an additional fee.

Seewirt Zauner offers guests the convenience of a contactless check-in from 3PM until 6PM as well as contactless check-out.

Seewirt Zauner is located at Marktpl. 51, 4830 in Hallstatt.

Paid parking is available at a reduced rate for guests outside of town in the P1 area. In addition, free shuttle service to Markplatz is available exclusively for check-in and check-out (not for transport throughout the stay).

Another exclusive, adults-only boutique property, Hallstatt Hideaway Hotel is easily one of the best Hallstatt hotels with lake views for an intimate escape.

With just five private suites, a stay here offers the utmost of tranquility.

For an exceptionally luxurious experience, book a penthouse suite with a lake view and prepare to be blown away.

In addition, guests can unwind at the Pine Sauna while soaking in the breathtaking view of Lake Hallstatt.

Alternatively, for a tranquil experience in the Great Outdoors, head to the property’s own private garden by the lake and recline in a cozy lounge chair with a view.

While there’s no on-site restaurant at Hallstatt Hideaway Hotel, breakfast is available for an additional fee.

Hallstatt Hideaway Hotel is located at Dr.-Friedrich-Morton-Weg 24, 4830 in Hallstatt.

Parking is available nearby for 12EUR per day.

Yet another adults-only boutique option to consider is lovely Boutiquehotel Strand Hallstatt. Located just along the shore, this property offers 10 junior suites, each featuring a balcony with a stunning view over Lake Hallstatt.

It also includes a private beach area for guests.

While there’s no on-site restaurant, a continental breakfast can be provided in the privacy of the hotel rooms at an additional fee.

Boutiquehotel Strand Hallstatt is located at 102 Seelände, 4830 in Hallstatt.

Unlike the other properties on this list, Boutiquehotel Strand Hallstatt offers guests the convenience and exclusivity of free parking in its large private lot.

For a charming, self-catering stay with a view of the lake, consider the Historic Lakeview Apartments Hallstatt.

The three rustic and homey units offer a historic atmosphere paired with modern amenities like a dishwasher and a Nespresso machine.

Beyond the in-room kitchens, guests can take advantage of a small community dining area on-site, though there’s no restaurant.

Historic Lakeview Apartments Hallstatt is located at Dr.-Friedrich-Morton-Weg 26, 4830 in Hallstatt.

Public parking is available nearby for 9EUR per day.

Housed in a charming and historic 15th-century building along the Market Square, Gasthof Simony-Hallstatt B&B offers a rustic atmosphere and stunning lake views.

This charming Hallstatt bed-and-breakfast option offers a dozen cozy rooms, some of which feature a view of Lake Hallstatt.

While there’s no on-site restaurant, a buffet breakfast is included in the stay and served from 7:30 – 9:30AM.

Gasthof Simony-Hallstatt B&B is located at Wolfengasse 105, 4830 in Hallstatt.

Paid parking is available outside of town in the P1 area and includes complimentary shuttle service for arrival and departure from 9AM until 7PM.

Located just steps from Museum Hallstatt, Pension Hallberg is a charming guest house with beautiful lake views.

This five-room, family-friendly property offers family rooms as well as a playground for the littlest of visitors.

There’s no restaurant, but all rooms include a kitchen.

Pension Hallberg is located at Seestraße 113, 4830 in Hallstatt.

Paid parking is available outside of town in the P1 area for 16EUR per day. From there, a complimentary shuttle service is available to the hotel upon request.

Pension Leopoldine is another lovely B&B option in Hallstatt. This family-run property offers nine charming rooms that feature mountain or lake views.

There’s no restaurant, but guests can take advantage of an on-site bar. In addition, breakfast is available only upon request for an extra fee.

Pension Leopoldine is located at Oberer Marktplatz 53, 4830 in Hallstatt.

Paid parking is available outside of town in the P1 area for 18EUR per day.

Family-run for four generations, Gasthof Weisses Lam has been serving guests since the 16th century.

This charming, 10-room inn features an on-site restaurant. Breakfast is also included in the stay and served between 8 and 10AM.

Paid parking is available outside of town in the P1 area. A complimentary shuttle service is offered every 30 minutes from 9AM until 7PM for arrivals and departures.
