Visiting Hallstatt in winter was on my bucket list for quite some time. I mean, with its striking snow-capped mountains, mystical lake-dwelling swans, and otherwise ethereal atmosphere, could you honestly blame me?

Fortunately, our recent trip to the Christmas markets of Innsbruck was the perfect  gateway for me to finally experience the Hallstatt winter of my Austrian-blooded dreams.

Yes! Hallstatt is worth visiting year-round, and winter is certainly no exception. This idyllic Austrian village is especially picturesque under a blanket of freshly-fallen snow with its stunning snowcapped mountains.

Plus, visitors can take advantage of better hotel prices and potentially better flight deals as well during this slower season.

The answer to this depends on what you wish to prioritize for your Austrian escape, whether that’s culture, tranquility, or otherwise. Hallstatt is an intimate village with a peaceful lakeside atmosphere, whereas Salzburg is a full-blown city with rich history and culture.

Although tiny Hallstatt doesn’t offer full-blown festivals such as the Christmas markets in Innsbruck, the village hosts a single-day Christmas market in December each year.

In addition, the winter atmosphere in Hallstatt simply cannot be replicated, from its cozy cafés to its serene mountain backdrops.

Yes! The Hallstatt ferry runs year-round, including during the winter months. This is the only way to reach the village from the train station, which we’ll cover in more detail later on in this post.

With its location in the Salzkammergut region of the Northern Alps, Hallstatt experiences cold and often snowy winters, typically hovering around the freezing mark.

Hallstatt sees high average temperatures in the mid-thirties (Fahrenheit) and average lows in the low-to-mid-twenties.

Cold season in Hallstatt lasts from mid-November through early March, with January being the coldest month of the year. January typically sees average highs of 36 degrees Fahrenheit and average lows of 24 degrees.

Winter can also bring with it a lot of clouds and fog, so be prepared for overcast days where you may not be able to catch a glimpse of the mountains for a few hours!

That said, Hallstatt felt significantly warmer to me than winter in Innsbruck, Austria, so I suppose it’s all relative!

If you’re looking to experience a magical snowfall while in Hallstatt,  January is the best time to visit, with a monthly average of 19 days of snow. This is followed by December, when it snows 17.5 days on average.

Hallstatt is certainly worth visiting, but it’s definitely not the most straightforward destination to reach – but that’s honestly part of its charm!

For one, Hallstatt is an extremely small village, so it doesn’t have its own airport (let alone an international one).

Instead, the closest international airport to Hallstatt is in Salzburg (W. A. Mozart Airport). So if you’re planning to fly into Austria and Hallstatt is the first destination on your itinerary, Salzburg Airport will be your best bet.

Alternatively, if you’re planning to visit other destinations in Austria before Hallstatt (and you’ll already be in the country), you’ll have a few different options.

Here are the options for traveling to Hallstatt:

Option 1: Travel by train(s) and then the ferry
Option 2: Take the bus
Option 3: Rent a car and drive
Option 4: Arrange a private transfer/join a tour

Traveling to Hallstatt by Train & Ferry 

There are a number of different trains you can take to Hallstatt, but the most popular routes are from Salzburg, Vienna, and Munich.

Vienna is the only direct train route to Hallstatt, and the journey takes a total of three hours and 12 minutes. All other routes will involve at least one change of train.

If you do decide to travel by train(s) to Hallstatt (which is the ideal way to visit IMHO), you’ll need to hop aboard a ferry as well. The vessel is known as the “Stefanie Ferry” and it’s the sole water connection between the station and the village.

There are no one-and-done train journeys into Hallstatt; every train journey will also involve a ferry.

This is because the Hallstatt train station (Hallstatt Bahnhof) is located across the lake from the central village, so traveling via water is the only way to get there.

Fortunately, the ferries conveniently run on a schedule that coincides with each train arrival, so it’ll be easy to catch one soon after you arrive at the station. The journey from the train station to the village via ferry is an easy 10 minutes.

Plus, as I mentioned earlier, ferries run year-round, so you won’t need to worry about getting stranded at the train station.

The cost for a one-way ferry ticket is 3.50EUR. Tickets can only be purchased day-of by cash only, so make sure to have some Euros on you!

Traveling to Hallstatt by Bus

Another mode of public transport to consider is the bus, which is a cost-effective way to reach Hallstatt. The most popular bus lines are 150, 542, and 543.

Traveling to Hallstatt by Rental Car

If you’re traveling to Hallstatt by car, it’s important to note that there’s no road access, meaning you won’t be able to drive through the historic center of the village. This is because Hallstatt has very limited parking spaces and they’re exclusively reserved for village residents.

If you ultimately decide to rent a car and drive to Hallstatt, you’ll need to park in one of the car parks located just outside the village. Do be aware that these tend to fill up quickly, so you’ll want to arrive as early as possible for the best chance of snagging a spot. You can check out the available parking lots in Hallstatt here.

Considering the driving and parking limitations, I personally don’t think it’s worth the hassle of driving to Hallstatt unless you’re stopping over for a quick day trip. (And even then, I still think it’s preferable to take the train and ferry!)

Traveling to Hallstatt by Private Shuttle/Tour Group

If you’d prefer a more a guided experience and/or a more hands-off approach, you can also hire a private shuttle or link up with a tour grip to see Hallstatt. This is especially ideal if you’re looking to do a day trip to the village, as opposed to an overnight stay.

Here are some great day trip options to consider from popular Austrian cities:

The best way to get around Hallstatt in winter (or any other time of year) is on your own two feet! Since the village is car-free – and too teeny to warrant public transportation – Hallstatt is a pedestrian’s paradise.

In fact, you can actually walk from one side of the village to the other in no more than 15 minutes!

Given its petite size, most anywhere you stay in Hallstatt will be lovely and conducive to getting around.

Personally, we really enjoyed our stay at the Heritage Hotel Hallstatt, a charming 4-star property which overlooks gorgeous Lake Hallstatt and the breathtaking Northern Alps.

This family-friendly hotel is spread out over three separate historic buildings and includes a lakeside restaurant and sauna.

Many people don’t realize that teeny Hallstatt actually hosts a Christmas market of its own! Although it only runs for a single day, it’s worth adding to your itinerary if you’re planning to visit Hallstatt in early December anyway.

This annual market traditionally runs on the same day each year: December 8 (a public holiday in Austria). Located in central Markplatz, this charming market features handmade treasures crafted by local artisans, traditional Austrian delicacies, and musical entertainment.

Even if you can’t make it to Hallstatt for the brief Christmas market experience, you certainly can’t miss a visit to Markplatz, the very heart of Hallstatt.

Hallstatt’s Market Square dates back to the 14th century and features the famous Holy Trinity statue. Today, it’s one of the most frequented spots in town (though it’s more peaceful in winter) and lined with cozy cafes and souvenir shops.

Hallstatt was made for exploring on foot, and one of the best ways to make the most of your visit is with a walking tour.

From private walking tours to photography-focused experiences, you’re sure to find something to match your travel style and preferences.

No trip to Hallstatt would be complete without a visit to the picture-perfect viewpoint of the iconic church that the village is famous for.

This hotspot is especially charming on a white winter day, when an ethereal dusting of snow blankets the landscape. It’s located atop a small hill (which is still easily accessible in winter) on the northern side of the village.

This location is known on Google Maps as Aussichtspunkt (the German word for “viewpoint”). You’ll find it to the right of the ferry station by walking just a few minutes up a small hill.

When visiting Hallstatt in winter, there’s nothing quite like a pick-me-up at a cozy café to beat the chill.

Die Gemischtwarenhandlung offers both savory and sweet treats as well as belly-warming beverages.

We enjoyed a mini pizza slice and delicious cappuccinos.

The café is also dog-friendly, and we spotted several furry family members during our visit.

Die Gemischtwarenhandlung is located at Gosaumühlstraße 62, 4830 in Hallstatt.

Hallstatt’s World Heritage Museum, Welterbemuseum is one of the most historic treasures in the small village of Hallstatt. This museum was founded in 1846 by Hallstatt’s original director of salt mines, Johann Georg Ramsauer. Its doors officially opened in 1884, when the museum came to full fruition.

It most recently underwent renovations in 2013 and consists of several galleries, including the prehistoric gallery, the Celtic gallery, the Hallstatt gallery, the Roman gallery, and the medieval gallery. The museum features everything from a salt mine replica, to coinage, to modern-day video animations.

If you’re visiting Hallstatt in winter (November through March), the museum is open Wednesday through Sunday with the exception of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. (Otherwise, it’s open daily for the rest of the year.)

Welterbemuseum is located at Seestraße 56, 4830 in Hallstatt.
