Hvar vs Korcula: Which Croatian Island Is Right for You?

Last Updated on December 1, 2022

If you’re looking to visit the Croatian islands but you’re limited on time, you may find yourself wrestling with the Hvar vs Korcula debate.

Which island is better? What does each have to offer? What will I be missing out on if I skip this one versus that one?

Sound familiar?

I also debated whether I should visit Hvar or Korcula – or whether I should do both islands and then trim our limited Croatia itinerary elsewhere. Let’s just say I ended up planning several different itineraries (and spent a boatload of time debating the best one) before I finally arrived at a decision!

Long story short, I cut our time in Split and used the mainland city as a jumping off point for more island time. As someone who typically prefers islands to major cities, this ended up being the best decision.

So whether you only have time for one island or you’re visiting both but aren’t sure how to divvy up your time, I’ve got you covered. Let’s crack the code on the Hvar vs. Korcula debate!

Hvar vs Korcula: Factors to Consider

Location & Ease of Travel

Hvar and Korcula are both located in the Adriatic Sea, with Hvar sitting northwest of Korcula. Hvar island is slightly larger than Korcula at nearly 115 square miles. Korcula is just under 108 square miles.

As far as traveling to the islands from the mainland goes, Hvar is closer to Croatia’s second-largest city of Split, while Korcula is closer to Dubrovnik.

(Psst! If you’re planning to visit the Pearl of the Adriatic in conjunction with Korcula, have a look at the best boutique hotels in Dubrovnik as well as my guide to walking the Dubrovnik Walls before you go!)

In any case, since neither island has an airport, the only way to reach both Hvar and Korcula is by ferry/catamaran.

Although neither is the world’s easiest destination to reach given this, Hvar is larger and therefore a bit more connected than Korcula, at least as far as transiting through Hvar Town goes.

(However, if you’re traveling with a car, you’ll need to catch a car ferry to Stari Grad on Hvar island, as Hvar Town ferries are passenger-only.)

If you’re taking the ferry from Hvar to Korcula (or vice versa), you’ll choose from two companies that service the islands: Jadrolinija and Kapetan Luka. The ferry ride is about 90 minutes. (We’ll get into more detail on this later.)

Ultimately, Hvar is a bit easier to travel to (without a car), though the difference is minimal.

Hvar vs Korcula: Travel Costs

When it comes to the ol’ travel budget, you’ll generally get more bang for your buck in Korcula (at least as far as restaurants and local transport are concerned). Whereas a typical dinner may cost around $25 (approx 193HRK) in Korcula, you could expect to pay over $30 (approx 232 HRK) in Hvar.

Hvar Town, in particular, is more trendy and cosmopolitan than Korcula Old Town, so you can expect to pay a premium for a cocktail and/or a sit-down dinner.

However, if you want to compare Korcula to Stari Grad (Hvar’s oldest town and one of the oldest in Europe), prices are much more on par.

Just keep in mind that the giveback of saving some cash in Korcula is that you’ll be met with less dining options than you would in Hvar.

Then again, if having less to choose from isn’t a concern and you’re on a more limited budget, Korcula will be a better bet for you in general.

Hvar vs Korcula: Accommodation

…And here’s where the whole theory about saving money in Korcula vs Hvar starts to unravel.

While Korcula costs considerably less in terms of dining out, activities, and transportation around the island, accommodation is a different story.

Since Hvar is the larger and busier destination of the two islands, there are considerably more accommodation options. I’m talking everything from budget-friendly hostels, to charming boutique hotels, to swanky island resorts with sprawling beachfronts. This range of properties means there’s also a greater range in cost.

While we’re on the topic, if you’re looking for Hvar properties, have a peek at my guide to the best boutique hotels in Hvar.

You’ll find a selection of fabulous waterfront accommodations in Hvar Town and Stari Grad as well as the smaller towns of Milna and Zavala.

Korcula, on the other hand, has few hotels and even fewer hostels, likely because it’s geared toward an older crowd than Hvar.

Here are some popular Korcula accommodations in different price ranges:

Mid-Range: Aminess Korcula Heritage Hotel
Budget:  Apartments Stelina

Hvar vs Korcula: Overall Vibe

Hvar and Korcula are obviously both Croatian islands, but outside of that, they’re about as similar as peanut butter and a lampshade. In other words…they’re super different.

If you’re stuck deciding whether Hvar or Korcula would be a better fit, start by considering your personal travel style and preferences.

Do you thrive in a stimulating environment with lots to do, fabulous restaurants, and buzzing nightlife? If so, Hvar will probably be a great fit for you. Hvar Town caters to a hip, young crowd with its rich nightlife and trendy beach clubs. From swanky bars to the best nightclubs, you’ll never be bored here.

Sound too overwhelming? Then you’ll be happy to know that there’s way more to Hvar island than Hvar Town. In fact, the island’s historic old town of Stari Grad may as well be on another planet! This slow-paced storybook town has the most idyllic waterfront and a completely different pace of life than cosmopolitan Hvar Town.

By the way, I have another handy guide to help you decide whether Hvar Town or Stari Grad is right for you so you don’t need to waste any time questioning it!

Prioritize Hvar if you prefer:

  • A stimulating, socially-focused environment
  • Trendy bars, restaurants, and beach clubs
  • A mix of excitement and relaxation (Hvar Town & Stari Grad)
  • More options overall (restaurants, accommodations, etc)
  • Easier access to other islands

Alternatively, if you love mountainous landscapes, dry white wine, and medieval architecture, you’ll be right at home on Korcula.

Plus, if the idea of slow travel, history, and cultural experiences appeal to you most, you should definitely focus your energy here. The vibe of Korcula is much more tranquil than Hvar Town and the island seems to cater to a more mature crowd.

Prioritize Korcula if you prefer:

  • A slower pace of life
  • A quieter, more local vibe
  • Activities/excursions that are more spread out
  • Vineyard-hopping
  • Cultural immersion (folk music, religious ceremonies, moreška sword dances)

Hvar vs Korcula: Top Activities

Whether you choose to spend more time on Hvar or Korcula, you won’t be short on things to do. Both islands offer amazing history, spectacular landscapes, laidback beaches, wonderful wineries, and so much more.

Fortunately, I’ve covered all of the can’t-miss activities so you won’t skip a beat. Be sure to check out the top things to do on Hvar as well as the best things to do on Korcula before you go!

Similarities Between Hvar & Korcula

I realize that I compared the two islands to peanut butter and a lampshade earlier, but despite obvious differences, they actually do have a few things in common.

First off, both islands make wonderful vacation spots for oenophiles and wine enthusiasts. That’s because they each offer fabulous wine-tasting opportunities.

Korcula’s wine culture is more pronounced with dozens upon dozens of wineries throughout the charming village of Lumbarda (as well as in the old town). They’re particularly known for Grk, a dry white that’s indigenous to Lumbarda due to the sandy soil and sun. Pošip is another popular variety you’ll find on the island.

While Hvar’s wine culture isn’t as immediately obvious as Korcula’s initially, there are no shortage of fabulous varieties to enjoy here as well. Some of the most popular include Plavac Mali, Bogdanuša, Prc, Darnekusa, and Palarusa, as well as Pošip.

Another similarity between the islands is that they both have old towns that are brimming with history. You can read more about how each of the towns came to be in my activity guides linked above!

In addition, both Hvar and Korcula are chock-full of beaches. While Hvar’s beaches are generally more popular and well-known, Korcula’s are quieter and more unassuming with more of a local feel.

How to Travel from Hvar to Korcula

If you’re traveling without a car, the journey from Hvar Town to Korcula Town is straightforward and direct on a passenger ferry. The trip can take anywhere from one hour and 10 minutes to 90 minutes based on the route.

As a foot passenger, you can either travel via the Kapetan Luka catamaran (also known as “Krilo”) or via the Jadrolinija catamaran.

If you’re traveling between Hvar and Korcula with Kapetan Luka, you can purchase tickets online.

If you’d prefer to get tickets in person, you can purchase them at following port offices:

Hvar – Pelegrini Tours office (located at the port)
Korcula – Kapetan Luka Office (Ulica Fosa 1)

Alternatively, if you’re traveling on Jadrolinija, you can either purchase tickets online or in person at the following offices:

Hvar – Jadrolinija office (Riva bb, 21450 in Hvar)
Vela Luka* – Jadrolinija office (Plokata 21 travanja 1921. Br. 34 in Korcula)

*Please note that you cannot purchase tickets in Korcula Old Town, as they’re only available for in-person purchase in Vela Luka.

PRO TIP: I recommend purchasing your tickets online in advance, particularly if you’re traveling during the high season (June through September). The ferries have limited space and they tend to fill up quickly, so purchasing in advance will ensure you make it on.

Another option is to charter a private boat. Although this is the quickest route, it will also be the costliest. Keep in mind that this will not be an option during the winter months.

If you’re traveling with a car, things will be a bit more complicated, as there’s no direct car ferry between Hvar and Korcula. Instead, you’ll need to take a ferry from either Split or Drvenik.

Hvar vs. Korcula: The Ultimate Decision

So, what will it be? Hvar or Korcula? Here are a few scenarios to consider.

Scenario 1: You only have time/money/resources for one island

If you’re on a limited budget, I suggest visiting Korcula, as you’ll save more overall.

Are you looking to visit Croatia but unsure whether to prioritize Hvar or Korcula? While both of these Croatian islands are strikingly beautiful and historic, they’re also incredibly different. Otherwise, if the budget is not a factor of concern, revisit the previous section about the “overall vibe” of the two islands. Consider which island will better suit your travel preferences, as this will affect your experience more than anything else.

Scenario 2: You want to see both islands but you have limited time

Choose one island as your base. This should be the island that you find yourself gravitating to more now that you’ve read this guide. Your base will be where you book your accommodation and settle in for a few days.

I recommend spending a minimum of three nights on your base, regardless of which you choose. Once you’ve decided on your main island, you can then plan a day trip to the other one.

Scenario 3: You can afford to give equal attention to each island

Well, what are you waiting for then? Click out of this post and book that flight! (Just kidding. Sort of.)

If your itinerary is more flexible, I recommend spending several nights on each island.

I suggest doing more than a one-night stay so that you can avoid lugging your suitcase back and forth on the ferry. (Keep in mind that you’ll have to pack up again the following morning so that you can check out of your accommodation.)

A slower travel experience will be much more enjoyable.

However, if you can’t swing more than a single night on one of the islands, I personally would opt for a day trip instead (as I mentioned in the second scenario). To maximize your time on a day trip, find a ferry that departs in the morning and then you can take the latest evening ferry back.

Maybe it’s because I loved both islands equally – or maybe it’s because I abhor decision-making – but my vote is to visit both! You’ll never truly know which island is “the one” for you until you spend time on each one.

That said, I realize that visiting both islands may not be realistic, depending on the length of your itinerary, budget, etc. In that case, I encourage you to consider my alternative suggestions.

Whatever you ultimately decide, keep in mind that there’s no “wrong” decision. After all, it’s pretty much impossible to have a bad time on any Croatian island!
