Regarded as one of the best small towns in Tuscany, there’s a surprising variety of things to do in Montepulciano, despite its modest size. Located just under two hours from Florence, Montepulciano is renowned for its bold, earthy wines and vineyard hotels, Renaissance palaces, and picturesque piazzas.

But despite all of the things to do in Montepulciano, it’s also the sort of place where one can be equally satisfied doing nothing at all, save gawking at the hypnotic hills.

Alternatively, if you’re looking to fully immerse yourself in this medieval hilltop town, I invite you to discover the treasures that await you in Montepulciano.

Top 20 Things to Do in Montepulciano

1. Go Vineyard Hopping

No trip to Montepulciano (nor the Tuscan countryside, for that matter) would be complete without a visit to one of the area’s many vineyards and wineries.

In fact, why limit yourself to just one when Montepulciano is ripe for vineyard hopping? (Pun very much intended.)

FUN FACT: The Montepulciano grape is a thick-skinned red grape that produces a medium-bodied dark red wine. It grows in central Italy, primarily in the Abruzzo region. Montepulciano wines are often confused with another Tuscan wine variety known as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano.

However, this variety is actually made predominantly from Sangiovese grapes, whereas the popular Montepulciano wine you’ll most likely come across is Montepucliano d’Abruzzo DOC.

While I definitely encourage you to check out the best Montepulciano wineries before your trip, I’m also sharing a few quick pointers here to prep your palette!

In terms of what you can expect in regards to cuisine, Montepulciano wine is best when enjoyed with savory foods, but it’s pretty versatile as far as food pairings go. While it’s often matched with hearty, savory meat dishes like brisket and bolognese, it’s just as agreeable with carnivore-friendly pizzas, such as those topped with pepperoni, sausage, and/or meatball.

However, in addition to its natural synchronicity with meats, Montepulciano wine is also suitable for vegetarians, harmoniously blending with everything from beets, to roasted tomatoes, to mushrooms, to squash.

While some say seeing is believing, I subscribe to the theory that tasting is believing! If you agree, you can enjoy a taste of the Montepulciano region for yourself on one of the many wine tours in the area:

2. ...Or Enjoy the Experience on Two Wheels with an eBike Wine Tour

Part of the appeal of visiting multiple vineyards is the chance to soak in the spectacular Tuscan scenery all around you.

And what better way to do that than by weaving through the countryside on an E-bike?

This exciting tour option will introduce you to a variety of wineries and includes two tastings in wine cellars. You’ll enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at the wine-making process in Tuscany while soaking in the beauty of this unique region.

Cheers to that!

3. Wander the Charming Streets of Montepulciano’s Old City

If a charming hilltop village lined with medieval architecture sounds appealing, then Montepulciano’s old city will be right up your alley!

…And while we’re on the topic of alleys, you’ll find so many hidden wonders by wandering through the labyrinth that is the old city.

Although the old city has just one main street that runs from Porta Al Prato to Piazza Grande, it packs a lot of punch.

Speaking of punch, keep an eye out for the Torre del Pulcinella when you first enter the old city. This iconic bell tower is topped with a life-sized Pulcinella (a classic Italian puppet show figure originating from commedia dell’arte and “Punch & Judy” shows). He carries a stick to strike the bell on the hour, much to the delight of passersby!

Piazza Grande (a.k.a Piazza Vittorio Emanuele) is the main square where you’ll find the heart of the action in Montepulciano.

It sits atop the highest point of the city and is typically abuzz with passersby and the café crowd. This marvelous square dates back to the 14th century and is bordered by inviting medieval- and Renaissanace-style buildings, including a clock tower, the Duomo, Palazzo Contucci (Contucci Palace), and Il Pozzo dei Grifi e dei Leon, a beautiful fountain adorned with griffins, lions, and a coat of arms.

FUN FACT: Piazza Grande was featured in New Moon, part two of the blockbuster-hit vampire series, Twilight.

What to Know Before You Go:

As a visitor, you can only access Montepulciano’s historic center on foot, as cars are strictly limited to the locals.

However, you can park at one of the many car parks surrounding the town and then walk in.

5. Visit Montepulciano’s Famous Churches

You couldn’t possibly expect to come to a charming Tuscan town and not discover churches, could you?

Fortunately, you won’t be short on options in Montepulciano. In fact, the city is known for three main churches (though one is technically in Siena):

If you’re having a look inside any of the churches, make sure to be respectful and dress appropriately.

6. Immerse Yourself in the Local Café Culture

If you’re in need of a pick-me-up of the caffeine variety and/or you’d like to sample a slice of local life, grab yourself a seat at Caffè Poliziano.

Between the artfully prepared coffee, the elegant tea room, the local delicacies, and the enviable views of the Tuscan countryside, this is far from your average café! In fact, this historic two-floor gem boasts dual balconies and a spacious panoramic terrace for guests to savor the impressive view over Val di Chiana.

How to Get Here:

Caffè Poliziano is located at Via Voltaia nel Corso, 27/29, 53045 Montepulciano SI.

7. Shop for Souvenirs Along Il Corso

If you’d like to bring a piece of Montepulciano back home with you, you won’t be short on options! Whether you’re looking to add to your own travel collection or hand-picking that perfect memento for a loved one back home, you’re sure to find something special on Il Corso.

This main city street is chock-full of charming boutiques loaded with treasures and trinkets just waiting to be plucked off the shelves, from handmade journals to fine leather goods.

Also known as Via di Gracciano and Via di Voltaia (to name a few), the lively Il Corso is also lined with plenty of options to tantalize hungry travelers as well, from casual cafes to more formal restaurants.

8. Visit the Museo Cívico

Museo Cívico – translated to “Municipal Museum” in English – is an art gallery and museum contained within the beautiful 14th-century Palazzo Neri Orsel. Here, visitors can get a glimpse of Montepulciano’s history.

It includes four distinctive sections spread out over four floors – a section for archeological treasures, a terracotta collection, the main art gallery, and a police section located at the underground level.

In addition to its fascinating interior and distinctive façade, the museum also includes a lovely courtyard area and a loggia.

What to Know Before You Go:

To plan your visit, you can check out ticket prices here.

Please Note: Museo Cívico is temporarily closed for renovation.

How to Get Here:

Museo Cívico is located at Via Ricci, 10, 53045 Montepulciano SI.

9. Marvel at Montepulciano’s Sweeping Landscapes from the Old City

If you thought Montepulciano’s old city was only about medieval buildings and fortifications, think again! Since it’s a hilltop town, you can expect some incredible views!

One of the best places to catch a glimpse of that sweeping Tuscan landscape you’ll recognize from the storybooks is along the lot at the end of Vicolo del Leone. You’ll find this spot off of the northwest corner of Piazza Grande.

If you’re visiting the Tuscan countryside, you can’t miss the hilltop town of Montepulciano. For a small town in Southern Tuscany, there are wonderful things to do in Montepulciano. Another viewpoint I’m particularly fond of can be accessed from the top of the stairs, Vicolo della Via Nuova. You can access the bottom of the staircase from Ristorante Cittino.

10....Or Take in the Spectacular Scenery on a Hike

While the views from the old city are certainly spectacular, there’s something special about getting out there and exploring the scenery on your own two feet.

Plus, with its meandering landscapes, Montepulciano is a hiker’s playground. There are numerous trails located throughout the village suitable for a variety of fitness levels, from beginner-friendly loops to moderate climbs.

You can check out some of the most popular hikes in Montepulciano here.

11. Join a Walking Tour (with Tasty Perks)

Given that you’ll be doing a lot of walking while exploring the old medieval city, you may as well join a walking tour!

This will give you the inside scoop on quirky historical details and fun facts you otherwise wouldn’t have known from a first glance or casual stroll.

Not convinced yet? What if I told you that there’s a tour that comes with a visit to a local restaurant, a sampling of regional specialties, and a wine tasting? Sound more appealing now?

Yeah, that’s what I thought…

12. Savor the Local Pasta

One of the absolutely irrefutable things to do in Montepulciano is try the “pici,” the local pasta. Trust me, your taste buds will agree! Pici is hands-down the best pasta I’ve ever had – both throughout our two weeks in Italy and in life! (You may also hear it referred to “Pici alla briciole” when it’s topped with breadcrumbs.)

If you’re visiting the Tuscan countryside, you can’t miss the hilltop town of Montepulciano. For a small town in Southern Tuscany, there are wonderful things to do in Montepulciano. Believe it or not, this thick and wide spaghetti-like pasta is made from only two ingredients: water and flour!

But despite having such a simple makeup, the texture and flavor is just heavenly. Really, it melts in your mouth when you eat it.

While this local pasta can be found in numerous restaurants throughout Montepulciano, my recommendation is to go to Ristorante La Briciola, where my husband and I ate.

They also make a wonderful ravioli, if you’re in the mood for something a little heartier.

13. Indulge in Delicious Chocolate from Laboratorio del Cioccolato

If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll have to pay a visit to Laboratorio del Cioccolato, Montepulciano’s beloved chocolate shop.

With one location in Montepulciano and two in Cortona, this chocolate brand proudly serve only the highest quality chocolate in their artisan laboratory. In addition, they also offer an organic line!

How to Get Here:

Laboratorio del Cioccolato is located at Via Ricci, 14/A 53045 Montepulciano.

14. Join a Deliciously Fun Cooking Class at a Local’s Home

Want to learn the chef secrets behind preparing delicious Tuscan cuisine? Well, there’s no better way to get the lowdown on what goes on behind-the-scenes in a true Italian kitchen than in a local’s home!

With various classes to choose from, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with local Italian families, peruse local markets, enjoy a hands-on cooking demonstration, and, of course, eat!

15. Join a Cooking Class at a Farm

If you’re after more of a rustic experience, you may enjoy the opportunity to cook on a Tuscan farm!

From bruschetta, to pici pasta, to a delicious dessert, you’ll cook alongside local housewives and enjoy an authentic farm experience with unrivaled countryside views!

16. Get a Glimpse into Hollywood Glamour with a Tour of Famous Tuscan Movie Sets

Did you know that Tuscany is a world-famous filming location for many major motion pictures?

As a former acting major, I’m all about anything having to do with filmmaking, especially if it involves travel! So if you’re anything like me, you definitely won’t want to miss this one-of-a-kind tour that will put you behind-the-scenes of former Tuscan film sets!

You’ll start with a meet-up in Montepulciano’s Piazza Grande – the location of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, as we discussed earlier – before visiting the sets of these cinematic masterpieces:

  • The English Patient
  • The Gladiator
  • Midsummer Night’s Dream
  • Under the Tuscan Sun
  • …and more!

Plus, you’ll polish off this fantastic experience with a tasting of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG at one of Montepulciano’s best underground wine cellars.

17. Take Things to New Heights with a Hot Air Balloon Ride!

One of my ultimate bucket-list items – and one that I’m frankly still working toward – is to sail over a gorgeous landscape on a hot air balloon ride.

If you have similar aerial aspirations, you can make your hot air balloon dreams come true while in Montepulciano!

Ballooning in Tuscany offers the option of a prosecco breakfast flight or a wine tasting and breakfast/brunch combination. You can check out the details and pricing information here.

In addition, if you’re looking to ride over Tuscany but open to venturing a bit outside of Montepulciano, here are some additional balloon tours to put on your radar:

18. Relax in Therapeutic Thermal Baths

After a jam-packed day wandering the old city and traversing the countryside, you deserve a little R&R.

Besides, one of the best things to do in Montepulciano is simply relax. Terme di Montepulciano Spa is the perfect antidote to tired legs and sore muscles after a long day of exploration.

Located about ten minutes from the city center, the sulphurous baths of Terme di Montepulciano are rich in calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate to help encourage circulation, ease joint paint, reduce stress, and detoxify the skin.

After the healing powers of an invigorating soak, you can also indulge in one of the center’s many spa and wellness treatments and/or take advantage of the center’s saline pool.

How to Get Here:

Terme di Montepulciano is located at Via delle Terme, 46 – 53045 Montepulciano SI.

19. Enjoy an Unforgettable Stay at a Wine Hotel

One of the most magnificent things about visiting Tuscany is the chance to enjoy a special vineyard hotel experience. So if you’re unfamiliar with the concept of a wine hotel, boy are you in for a treat!

A wine hotel is exactly what it sounds like – a hotel either on or adjacent to a winery or vineyard that puts an emphasis on its vino!

If I’ve piqued your interest, be sure to check out my companion piece on the most romantic wine hotels in Tuscany. In it, I’ve shared all of the details about our incredible wine stay at Borgo Tre Rose, one of my favorite hotel experiences to date.

In addition, I’ve included inspiration for other incredible wine-friendly accommodations throughout the Tuscan countryside!

20. Take a Day Trip to a Neighboring Tuscan Town

While picturesque Montepulciano is everything you hope a Tuscan hilltop town will be, it’s one of many!

For this reason, I suggest that you venture outside of Montepulciano and check out some of the other incredible towns that make this region so special. Fortunately, there are no shortage of options – and many of them make great day trips from Florence, too!

I really hope that you’ve enjoyed these fun things to do in Montepulciano. Although this picturesque village is still relatively small as far as Tuscan towns go, it’s well worth a trip, even if just for a day!
