The Amalfi Coast was on my bucket list for years, so it was a dream-come-true to finally experience the wonderful things to do in Positano.

So whether this Italian icon has been on your radar for a while or you’re fairly new to discerning Positano’s best views, I invite you to discover the best things to do in this gorgeous village!

But First – Is Positano Worth Visiting?

This question seems to come up a lot, so I figured I’d address it before we dive into all of these fun activities.

First off, I obviously believe that Positano is worth visiting; I did write this guide on it, after all! Provided you can avoid the peak summer rush and figure out how to get to Positano in the shoulder season (particularly around early May or mid-late September), you can enjoy a peaceful escape and plenty of R&R. My husband and I were here in late September, which I highly recommend.

However, I did want to briefly mention that Positano was quite different than I anticipated. First off, from a visual standpoint, it’s even more stunning in person than in photographs.

That said, I did find the town to be a bit boring overall, which I realize reeks of a “first-world problem.” It’s just that I had tremendously high expectations for it based on what I’d seen online and it fell a bit short for me personally.

(To be honest, I felt similarly about Taormina, so be sure to have a look at my comparison between Taormina and Positano if you’re considering adding Sicily to your trip.)

Now, don’t get me wrong. It’s not that the town isn’t beautiful; its attractiveness is undeniable!

But after a day here, I was ready for some more action. Unfortunately, this was the end of our two weeks in Italy, so we didn’t have time to visit the remainder of the Amalfi Coast.

However, I’m wishing we had, as I think it would’ve given me a broader perspective of the town and scratched the itch I felt for more adventure. In any case, there are certainly things to do in Positano. It’s just not the place you should come to looking for action-packed adventure.

It’s much more of a “slow simmer” destination for those who enjoy lazy beach days, sailing, boutique shopping, and perhaps a bit of hiking.

If you’re looking for a more stimulating coastal Italian destination, I highly recommend the Cinque Terre, which I personally preferred.

25 Awesome Things to Do in Positano

1. Go Beach Hopping

As one of the Italian coastal towns, one of the most popular Positano attractions is most definitely the beach.

Although there are a number of beautiful beaches in Positano, the main one is Spiaggia Grande, aka Marina Grande Beach. This is the largest option and easily the most popular. If you’ve seen pictures of Positano on Instagram, for example, this is probably the one you’re familiar with.

However, there are plenty more slices of paradise to uncover here! So if you’re craving some fun in the sun, be sure to check out the best beaches in Positano, from crowd-favorites to hidden gems.

PHOTO TIP: If you want a crowd-free photo on this Insta-famous beach, you’ll need to get here early. If you arrive around 8AM (before the beach actually opens), you can get your shots without a hassle – and without having to rent a sun bed!

How to Get Here:

Spiaggia Grande is located southeast of the town, just off of the city center.

2. Take Advantage of Other Aquatic Activities

If you’re not much of a beach bum but you do enjoy water sports, there’s still plenty to keep you occupied in Positano. From snorkeling to diving, this village is definitely a water-friendly destination!

You may even wish to link up with a group and learn about the best attractions in Positano and beyond from an experienced captain!

3. Explore the Coastline by Boat

Speaking of aquatic endeavors, one of the best ways to appreciate the stunning coastal town of Positano is by boat!

This is definitely something I’m bummed that I missed out on the first time around. I’ve heard countless wonderful things about the boat tours around Positano, so if you can fit this activity in your itinerary, definitely do!

There are numerous tours you can choose from, and I’ve included one below to get you started.

4. Visit a Few Art Galleries & Support Local Artists

One of the things that surprised me most – in the best way possible – was the strong art culture in Positano. Just like curious travelers, artists are magnetically drawn to the irresistible landscapes of Positano, which is why it’s such a popular subject for many paintings.

For instance, you’ll find numerous art galleries as you wander through the center of town.

Are you looking for fun things to do on a sun-soaked escape to Positano? The jewel of the Amalfi Coast has become one of Italy’s top visited destinations. This Positano travel guide will introduce you to 25 awesome activities, from strolling the streets of Positano, to joining a Positano boat tour, to shopping in Positano, to dining at the top Positano restaurants with a view. Here are some galleries I recommend popping into while you’re in town:

  • Miniaci Art Gallery (Piazza dei Mulini, 8, 84017 Positano SA)
  • Franco Senesi Fine Art ((Piazza dei Mulini, 16, 84017 Positano SA)
  • Liquid Art System (Via dei Mulini, 16/26, 84017 Positano SA)

In addition, you’ll likely see plenty of local artists in action on the streets, too!

I was actually considering purchasing a painting to take back home with me, but I knew there was no way I was fitting it in with my luggage. I’m still kicking myself that I didn’t ask about shipping to the US…

In any case, supporting local artists with your purchases (however small) is a great way to bolster the town; plus, you’ll have a wonderful keepsake to treasure forever.

5. Take a Leisurely Stroll through the Old Town

Positano’s old town is definitely where the center of the action is, from shops, to restaurants and cafés, to art galleries. My personal favorite street is Piazza dei Mulini, which is covered by a gorgeous canopy.

Are you looking for fun things to do on a sun-soaked escape to Positano? The jewel of the Amalfi Coast has become one of Italy’s top visited destinations. Discover the best things to do in Positano on your first trip! #positanoamalficoast #positanowhattodo #positanomustsee

PRO TIP: If you’re able to visit Positano during the springtime, you can see this canopy draping with beautiful bougainvillea or wisteria, depending on when you arrive!

While the old town of Positano isn’t particularly large, it’s the perfect place for a leisurely stroll (emphasis on leisurely). After all, you’ll need time to photograph all of the beautiful streets!

6. ...Or Join a Walking Tour

While an independent stroll through town certainly has its merits, there’s a lot to be said for a guided experience as well.

Plus, given that Positano is riddled with secret alleyways and fascinating spots that aren’t obvious to the naked eye, a tour will ensure you don’t miss any of them!

So if you have the luxury of time, I recommend joining a tour. This way, you’ll make the most of your visit and gain invaluable insight and historic knowledge from a local guide.

7. Shop for Specialty Items and Souvenirs at the Boutiques

In addition to strolling (and possibly touring), you’ll probably want to do more than just window-shop as you walk along. Trust me, the charming boutiques you’ll find are just bursting with gorgeous goodies!

So if you’re planning to get some shopping time in, I recommend heading out in the morning as the boutiques begin to open. This way, you’ll be able to browse as you choose, while enjoying a peaceful start to the day (sans crowds).

One of the most special things about the clothing stores, in particular, are the one-of-a-kind pieces you’ll find. That said, expect to pay a premium for these special finds; dress prices average around $100 on the low-end!

That said, you can feel good about your purchases here, as you’ll be supporting small local shop owners who rely on your business to support themselves.

8. Check Out the Beloved Ceramic Assunta

If colorful, handmade pottery is up your alley, you can’t miss a visit to Ceramic Assunta!

This charming ceramics brand actually operates three separate storefronts in Positano. Each store offers unique goods ranging from handmade pottery, to tableware, to unique household décor, all of which they’ve been lovingly handcrafting since 1948.

PHOTO TIP: Ceramic Assunta has become Insta-famous in recent years!

However, unless it’s explicitly stated otherwise, you’re not permitted to take photographs inside Ceramic Assunta.

That said, you are welcome to take shots of the exterior. Just be respectful and try to snap your photos quickly without disrupting the traffic flow.

PRO TIP: Ceramic Assunta offers worldwide shipping, so definitely take advantage of this if you purchase something. This way, you won’t have to worry about breaking your beloved new keepsake on the journey home!

How to Get Here:

The Ceramic Assunta with the red façade (pictured above) tends to be the most popular of the three storefronts. It’s located at Via Cristoforo Colombo, 97, 84017 Positano SA.

9. Scope out the Best Views

The village has so many amazing vantage points that I’ve dedicated an entirely separate post to all of the best views in Positano!

In addition, I can let you in on one of the (potentially) lesser-known gems here. This is a perfect place to go if you want to capture the iconic coastal view away from the crowds.

How to Get Here:

To find the view above, ascend the staircase leading away from Spiaggia Grande (the main beach). When you reach the platform atop the steps, follow the pathway that overlooks the sea. You’ll find this spot underneath some trees at about the mid-way point between Spiaggia Grande and Fornillo (the next beach over).

10. Take a Scenic Hike

It should come as no surprise that the most amazing views in any destination are typically earned on a hike. Fortunately, the same holds true in Positano!

My husband and I hiked Amalfi Drive and were rewarded with this spectacular view.

Another one of the most popular hikes in Positano – and along the Amalfi Coast in general – is the Path of the Gods.

This clifftop trail runs along the Amalfi Coast for just under five miles, connecting the small villages of Bomerano, Nocelle, and Positano.

In terms of difficulty, the hike is moderate and takes approximately three to five hours to complete, depending on how often you stop to rest, take photos, etc.

If you’d prefer not to hike alone, you can link up with a group and enjoy a guided tour for this awesome experience.

11. Explore the Coastline on a Vespa

I’ll be honest – I’m a total chicken when it comes to Vespas. Sure, they look awesome, but then there’s the whole part about having to trust that the universe has my back and all…

Trust me, I wish I wasn’t such a coward because I truly believe that riding one has to be one of the best ways to experience the Amalfi Coast, wind whipping through your hair and all!

My husband, on the other hand, was seriously considering renting one when we first started planning our trip to Positano. Frankly, part of me wishes we had!

In any case, I did want to include it as one of the top things to do in Positano. Plenty of brave souls go for it and they all appear to be having a blast!

What do you think? Have you ridden on one before? I welcome and encourage you to sell and un-scare me in the comments!

12. Indulge on a Food Tour

What’s the fun in traveling to Italy if you can’t enjoy all of the wonderful food?

While you can always sample independently as you go, a food tour can satisfy those culinary cravings and curiosities in a more meaningful way. Between appetizers, pastas, and delectable desserts, you’ll gain a unique perspective of the local cuisine that your palette won’t soon forget!

P.S. If you’re a foodie, don’t miss my gastronomic guide, including all of the best restaurants in Positano with killer views!

13. Visit the Church of Santa Maria Assunta

Honestly, did you even go to Italy if you didn’t visit at least one church?

Well, when you’re in Positano, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is the one to see!

This striking Byzantine-style church dates back to the 12th century and later underwent major renovations from 1777 – 1783. The gold church dome is an icon in Positano, dominating the skyline.

You can read more about the church and its history here.

And just in case you were wondering, the interior is pretty special as well.

How to Get Here:

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is located at Piazza Flavio Gioia, 84017 Amalfi SA.

14. Buy All the Lemon-Inspired Goodies

In case you’re not super familiar, the Amalfi Coast is the land of lemons! Yes, you’ll find these citrus delights practically everywhere in Positano – suspended from ceilings, draping over walkways, filling fresh fruit stands, and topping local dishes.

And that’s not all! It’s quite common to see shops carrying lemon wares as well, from soaps, to candles, to dishes and aprons!

Needless to say, visiting at least one citrus-inspired store is a must! My personal favorite is along Piazza dei Mulini.

Another popular lemon spot is Sapori e Profumi di Positano, aka the “Lemon Shop.”

15. Cool Down with a Lemon Sorbet Treat

If all this talk about lemons is making you hungry, not to worry! (Also, me too.)

One of the best treats you can get in Positano (aside from the limoncello, of course) is lemon sorbet.

But this is no ordinary sorbet! Instead, it’s served inside of – yup, you guessed it – a fresh, juicy lemon!

Needless to say, depending on what time of year you visit, Positano can get hot (this is southern Italy, after all). The peak summer season of July and August, in particular, brings average temperatures in the nineties.

Trust me when I say, this little lemon delicacy will be the perfect pick-me-up on a hot day! You’ll find these little treats in a bunch of the gelato shops in the old town.

After grabbing one, just find yourself a comfy spot to sit (preferably by the water) and start indulging!

16. Dine with a Killer View at Il Tridente of Hotel Poseidon

No discussion of Positano delicacies would be complete without a mention of Il Tridente. This Insta-famous restaurant is part of the iconic Hotel Poseidon and the views are simply breathtaking.

The restaurant is perched above the center of Positano, offering a stunning panorama of the cliffside and sea below.

Truly, sitting here on our last night in Italy was one of the most pinch-me moments I’ve ever experienced on our travels!

In fact, I was so inspired that I’ve dedicated a separate post entirely to the Positano restaurants you can’t miss!

Please Note: Il Tridente will reopen on April 7, 2022.

How to Get Here:

Il Tridente is located within Hotel Poseidon at Viale Pasitea, 148, 84017 Positano SA.

17. Explore the Emerald Grotto

Located about 30 minutes outside of Positano in Conca dei Marini, you’ll find the spectacular Emerald Grotto (Grotto dello Smeraldo, in Italian).

So named after the green hue that’s reflected off the water, this cave can be reached via a tunnel by way of a small boat. This makes for an exciting excursion and only takes about 30 minutes to reach by boat. The best way to visit is with a tour, as you can enter it only with a grotto-style rowboat.

If you have a day to dedicate to this experience, I’d recommend the Amalfi half-day cruise. This excursion includes a visit to the Emerald Grotto as well as the Bay of Conca and additional stops in Positano.

How to Get Here:

The Emerald Grotto is located at Via Smeraldo, 84010 Conca dei Marini SA.

18. Enjoy Sunset Drinks at Francos Bar of Le Sirenuse

If you’re looking for a spectacular sunset spot where you can enjoy an aperitif, look no further than Francos Bar.

Part of the famous Le Sirenuse Hotel, this special seaside al fresco bar serves up quality drinks with top-notch views.

PRO TIP: Francos Bar doesn’t accept reservations. However, for the best chance of snagging a table without a crowd, I recommend arriving just before sunset, ideally before 7PM.

How to Get Here:

Francos Bar is located at Via Cristoforo Colombo 30, 84017 Positano SA.

19. Rock Out at Music on the Rocks

Now I’ll be the first to admit that the nightclub scene typically isn’t, well, my scene. But a nightclub that’s located inside of a cave? In Italy? Now you have my attention!

Well, if I’ve managed to pique yours as well, then you should definitely consider an after-dark visit to Music on the Rocks.

Regarded as one of the top nightclubs along the Amalfi Coast, this subterranean venue and “dinner disco club” adds a whole new meaning to partying after dark.

Plus, with reasonably-priced drinks, you may just have to cave and check it out!

(Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

How to Get Here:

Music on the Rocks is located at dell’incanto, Via Grotte, 50, 84017 Positano SA.

20. Visit the Roman Archaeological Museum of Positano

Whether you’re a history buff or you simply need a break from the sun, the Roman Archaeological Museum of Positano is a fun indoor activity to consider.

The Museo Archeologico Romano – or MAR, as it’s often abbreviated by the locals – has undergone many iterations of restorations, with a piece of the villa dating as far back as the first century AD.

Here, you can venture through two distinct crypts, an upper crypt and a lower medieval crypt. Each is chock-full of ancient wonders and fascinating finds. Ideally, you should dedicate about two to three hours to this experience.

How to Get Here:

The Roman Archaeological Museum of Positano is located at Piazza Flavio Gioia, 7, 84017 Positano SA.

You’ll find it behind the bell tower of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta.

21. Venture Out to See the Pompeii Ruins

If you have room in your itinerary, you may want to consider adding the fascinating ancient city of Pompeii to your schedule.

This famous archaeological site makes for a wonderful day trip from Positano, allowing you to witness the ancient ruins of this famed city firsthand.

Ideally, you’ll want to join a tour so that you can discover the hidden history hiding beneath the surface, including what life was like prior to the Mt Vesuvius eruption.

22. Rent a Vintage Car & Drive Along the Coast

If you fantasize about experiencing the Italy of a bygone era, you’ll absolutely love this fun nod to the past!

Positano Vintage Dream helps travelers live out their vintage dreams with classic vehicle rentals.

Whether you’re feeling the vibe of a cool convertible for an unforgettable vacation or you want to add that special touch to your destination wedding, this is the perfect way to do it.

As a vintage lover who listens to jazz music on repeat, this is definitely something I’d love to experience on a future trip!

23. Snag a Room with a View

While staying in Positano, a room with a view is practically mandatory!

Fortunately, most of the accommodations you’ll find here have something appealing to offer outside the window, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Although many of the hotels with views aren’t cheap, you can find some budget-friendly accommodations like Villa Maria Antonietta, where we enjoyed a wonderful 3-night stay.

Be sure to check out the best boutique hotels in Positano for the top places to stay, from beachfront beauties to hilltop hideaways.

24. Take a Bajillion Photos

I’m sure you’ve already gathered that Positano is incredibly photogenic. Between the coastal views, the cliffside villas, and bougainvillea that seems to crop up everywhere, there’s always something to capture here.

Frankly, it would be devastating not to have a camera with you in Positano. Personally, I couldn’t put my camera down here and I didn’t even take as many photos as I had initially intended to.

Also, while we’re on the subject of photography, I did want to note that you’ll want to consider the weight of your camera gear. Positano is extremely steep and it will seem as though you’re perpetually climbing a StairMaster while you’re here.

While I’ve gotten accustomed to lugging my camera equipment around on my back Greek-donkey-style, this understandably may be a deal-breaker for you. In that case, an iPhone would be a perfectly acceptable alternative.

25. Take a Day Trip Along the Amalfi Coast

One of the best things about being along the Amalfi Coast is exactly that – there are so many coastal gems to explore. Speaking of, stay tuned for a separate post on the best Amalfi Coast towns to visit, coming soon to the blog!

From nearby Capri, to the town that bears the coastline’s name, to the resort town of Ravello, there are so many wonderful options just a brief boat ride away.

As you can see, there’s plenty to do in Positano, and I hope that this guide has provided you with loads of inspiration for your first trip!

From nearby Capri, to the town that bears the coastline’s name, to the resort town of Ravello, there are so many wonderful options just a brief boat ride away.
