Fun Things to Do on Hvar (within Hvar Town)

1. Explore St. Stephen’s Square

St. Stephen’s Square, also known as Pjaca, is one of the most iconic landmarks in Hvar Town.

Croatia’s sunniest island has so much to offer travelers, from exciting nightlife, to fascinating history, to swanky beach clubs, to the beautiful Hvar fortress. Exploring this area is perhaps one of the most obvious things to do on Hvar, given that it’s a main hub and thoroughfare on the island.

This Renaissance square is home to the beautiful St. Stephen Cathedral as well as Hvar Public Theatre, the oldest public theatre in Europe, built back in 1612. It was once an area of great significance, as it was the main gathering place when Hvar was ruled by the Venetians.

FUN FACT: Formerly a deep bay, St. Stephen’s Square is the largest square in Dalmatia. It was eventually constructed into a square to bridge the gap between the north (Grada) and the south (Burg).

Today, the square is an area of great activity. You’ll find everything from cafés, restaurants, and small shops here.

How to Get Here:

St. Stephen’s Cathedral is located at Trg Sv. Stjepana, 21450 in Hvar.

2. Join a Guided Walking Tour

While there’s plenty to discover by exploring Hvar on your own, a walking tour can provide a greater context of the island. In addition to learning more about the island’s history, a guide can also introduce you to important sites as well as hidden gems you may have otherwise missed.

In particular, this walking tour will take you to some of the top sites on Hvar. From the oldest public theatre, to ancient Cypress trees, to secret stories hidden within the well-worn cobblestone streets, you’ll experience Hvar in a whole new light.

3. Hike Up to the Spanish Fortress (Tvrdava Fortica)

If there’s one thing you must experience while in Hvar Town, it’s Trdava Fortica. The name translates to “Spanish Fortress” in English, but it’s commonly known as Španjola amongst the locals. The symbol of Hvar, this is easily one of the most iconic spots on the island.

In fact, if you’ve been researching Hvar at all before landing on this post, chances are you probably saw a photo of it without even realizing. It’s the spot overlooking the Pakleni islands in the distance.

Look familiar?

If not, then I’m happy to introduce you to it!

Dating back to the 16th century, Trdava Fortica is a bit of a hike to reach (literally), but it’s well worth the effort. From here, you’ll enjoy a unique perspective featuring panoramic views over Hvar Town.

In addition to the main view that everyone comes for, the fortress offers plenty of alternative angles and perspectives to enjoy. Once you enter, you can climb up a variety of staircases to check out the island from different viewpoints.

I highly recommend coming for sunset to enjoy the best lighting.

What to Know Before You Go:

The hike to Trdava Fortica involves a combination of walking up steps through old town streets and climbing up a hill with some switchbacks. Personally, I didn’t find the hill to be particularly strenuous. You can definitely go at your own pace and stop to enjoy the views along the way. It took my husband and I about a half hour to make the climb.

If you want to access the fortress, you’ll need to purchase an entrance ticket for 70HRK (as of August 2022). There will be someone selling tickets at a booth directly in front of the entrance in the high season. (I’ve read that there’s no one selling tickets in the low season.)

Otherwise, you can only climb as far as the outer walls of the fortress. Here, you can still enjoy a nice view and relax on one of the benches, but it’s definitely not the full effect of what you can expect at the top.

If you’re not up for the hike, you can also hire a taxi/rental vehicle to take you to the top.

The fortress is open from 9AM – 9PM.

How to Get Here:

Trdava Fortica is located at Ul. Biskupa Jurja Dubokovica 80, 21450 in Hvar.

You’ll start by hiking through Dr. Josip Avelini Park, which is the switchback path below the fortress. This path begins at the top of Kroz Grodu, which are the stairs leading up from port.

4. Check Out the Franciscan Monastery

Set along the edge of the waterfront a mere 500 meters from St. Stephen’s Square is the historic Franciscan Monastery.

This 15th-century landmark is more than just a Catholic Church – it’s also home to a small museum featuring a combination of Venetian, Roman, and Greek collections, including a massive painting of The Last Supper.

FUN FACT: The Franciscan Monastery was brought to life via donations from members of the Croatian nobility and ship captains. It originally served as a church of sailors.

What to Know Before You Go:

The Franciscan Monastery is open every day except Sunday. Hours are from 9AM to 3PM and from 5PM to 7PM.

How to Get Here:

The Franciscan Monastery is located at Šetalište put Križa, 21450 in Hvar.

5. Go Beach-Hopping

Hvar is known for its many, many beaches.

Are you searching for the best things to do on Hvar? However, they’re not the type of beaches you may be accustomed to, particularly if you’re used to the white sandy tropical spots (like the beaches of Curacao, for example).

Instead, many of the beaches on Hvar share one or more of these common features:

  • They’re rocky/pebbly
  • They’re more like “coves” than traditional beaches
  • They’re located off of concrete jetties

While the majority of beaches you’ll find here are rocky (particularly within the town), you can also find a limited number of (mostly) sand beaches.

However, keep in mind that these are few and far between and you’ll need a car to reach them. (Personally, we didn’t come across any sand beaches during as our stay, as we were without a car.)

As for Hvar Town itself, you can expect to find numerous coves tucked into the coastline as well as plenty of beach clubs/bars (more on those later).

Probably my favorite aspect of Hvar beaches is that many of them are at least partially covered with trees, meaning they offer some shade! You can often find a shady spot if you’re one of the first to arrive.

Popular Beaches within Hvar Town:
  • Hvar Town Beach (Franciscan Monastery Beach)
  • Amfora Beach (located in front of Hotel Amfora)
  • Sirena Beach (located in front of Sirena Beach)
Popular Beaches Outside of Hvar Town:
  • Bay Lucisca
  • Beach Dubovica
  • Pokonji dol Beach
  • Beach Prapatna
  • Jagodna Beach
  • Malo Zarace Beach

6. Chill Out (or Party) at a Beach Club or Beach Bar

While beach-hopping is always fun, the highlight of Hvar is not necessarily the beaches themselves but its impressive range of beach clubs.

Are you searching for the best things to do on Hvar? Croatia’s sunniest island has so much to offer travelers, from exciting nightlife, to fascinating history, to swanky beach clubs, to the beautiful Hvar fortress. Hvar Town definitely caters to a young crowd and its trendy beach clubs are evidence of that. As you stroll along the seaside promenade in the opposite direction of the harbor, you’ll find beach clubs galore. Seriously, you’ll have your pick!

Popular Beach Clubs & Bars on Hvar:
  • Hvar Beach Club – If exclusivity is what you’re after, Hvar Beach Club will be right up your alley. This private beach club is considered to be one of the best in Europe. Here, you can rent everything from a simple sunbed to a lavish cabana with the works for the ultimate luxe life. You can check pricing and booking info here.
  • Hula Hula Beach Bar – If you’d prefer not having to wait for dusk to put your party hat on, Hula Hula Beach Bar will surely deliver. Part daytime-party spot and part relaxing beach oasis, this popular hotspot is considered one of the best sunset points on the island. Just make sure to bring cash if you’re planning to order at the bar.
  • Falko Beach Bar & Food – More hidden gem than hotspot, Falko is perfect if you’re after a more low-key experience without sacrificing great food and drinks. It’s also located off of a great snorkeling spot, if you’re looking to enjoy some water time. Plus, since this seaside spot is a bit removed from the main action, you can also expect to save some cash – double win!

7. Enjoy a Romantic Dining Experience at Restaurant Park Hvar

One of my favorite experiences in Hvar Town was starting the day with the delicious breakfast buffet at Restaurant Park Hvar of Heritage Hotel Park Hvar.

This gorgeous garden setting feels like a peaceful oasis, yet it’s still in a prime location with beautiful harbor views.

FUN FACT: You can enjoy complimentary access to the fabulous breakfast buffet if you’re staying at either Heritage Hotel Park Hvar or its partner property, Hvar Riva Rooms.

Beyond the sumptuous breakfast offerings, Restaurant Park Hvar also serves as a beautiful backdrop for everything from romantic fine dining experiences to private wedding receptions.

8. Indulge with Gnocchi from Konoba Banaca

Frankly, I feel a little guilty writing this, but I had the best gnocchi of my entire life on Hvar!

(For context, I’ve eaten homemade gnocchi in Italy, including some from the best restaurants in Positano.)

I was certainly never expecting this, but boy-oh-boy, the food at Konoba Bonaca really knocked our socks off!

You’ll have to walk up a staircase to reach the restaurant, which offers a privileged position over the port. You can make a reservation via their website, but my husband and I were walk-ins and were seated immediately.

How to Get Here:

Konoba Bonaca is located at Riva 28, 21450 in Hvar.

9. Indulge in Gelato at Aroma

What’s a trip to Europe – particularly to an island – without some gelato?

Fortunately, you won’t have to go far to find delicious gelato when you’re in Hvar Town. That’s because my sweet-treat venue of choice is aROMA Gelato Boutique, located just along the harbor

But don’t just take my word for it; take a cue from how many aROMA locations there are throughout Croatia!

The mouthwatering gelato sold at aROMA is handmade from natural ingredients without any artificial colors/flavors/additives. No wonder it tastes so spectacular!

With 50 flavors to choose from ranging from Stracciatella to lemon with basil, there’s something to suit every palette. They even offer a special vegan dark chocolate variety!

My personal favorite is the Stracciatella. (Although I snapped a picture of it, we enjoyed our sweet treat at night, so the shot was quite dark).

Instead, I’ve shared a gelato picture from their Instagram page which was taken right where we enjoyed ours – along the harbor!

How to Get Here:

aROMA Gelato Boutique is located at Fabrika 25, 21450 in Hvar.

10. Stay Along the Harbour of Hvar

One of the best things to do on Hvar is to stay along the waterfront. Not only is this a beautiful setting to wake up to each day, but it’s also super convenient and highly conducive to island-hopping, as ferries depart right from here.

My husband and I greatly enjoyed our stay at Hvar Riva Rooms; we honestly couldn’t have dreamt of a better location.

I’ve shared all of the details about our stay in my guide to the best boutique hotels in Hvar, so be sure to head there for some accommodation inspiration.

Fun Things to Do on Hvar (Outside of Hvar Town)

11. Take a Day Trip to Stari Grad

If the party scene of Hvar Town is, well, not your scene, then I have the perfect alternative for you: Stari Grad. Located in northern Hvar, this quaint and subdued town is the oldest on the island and feels like the polar opposite of Hvar Town in pretty much every way possible.

Are you searching for the best things to do on Hvar? Croatia’s sunniest island has so much to offer travelers, from exciting nightlife, to fascinating history, to swanky beach clubs, to the beautiful Hvar fortress. So whether you’re looking to explore Hvar Town, do a fun Hvar day trip, or make the most of the beach club scene in Hvar at night, you’ll find it all here! #hvarcroatiathingstodo #hvarthingstodo #hvarnightlife

While it may feel a bit sleepy in the off season, Stari Grad is really a place where you can escape the crowds during the busier times of year. Whether you’re strolling along the peaceful harbor or getting lost in the labyrinth of ancient streets that seem straight out of a storybook, you’ll be swept away by the unique charm.

Plus, while in Stari Grad you can enjoy an easy outlet to the Stari Grad Plain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This unique area is known for producing a distinct variety of wine which is best enjoyed at the idyllic HoraHvar.

Whereas Hvar Town is (over)stimulating, Stari Grad is tranquil and unassuming. Frankly, the towns are so polarizing you might forget that you’re still on the same island!

I highly recommend checking out my companion guide so that you can decide whether to prioritize Hvar Town or Stari Grad. Trust me, it’ll save you a lot of unnecessary time (and frustration) researching.

Spoiler Alert: Ultimately, I suggest you visit both towns for the full Hvar experience.

That said, if you have pretty limited time on the island or you could simply use a bit of help deciding where to base yourself, definitely have a look.

Fortunately, Stari Grad is just over a half-hour bus ride from Hvar Town, so you can easily do a day trip here or even just spend a few hours exploring.

12. Take a Day Trip to the Pakleni Islands

If you’re not familiar with the Pakleni islands – sometimes referred to as the Paklinski islands or simply “The Pakleni”  – then you’re in for a treat. This pack of uninhabited islands form an archipelago off of the southwest coast of Hvar.

These car-free islands can be a welcome escape from mainland Hvar. They’re known for having some of the best beaches with the clearest blue water on the islands.

Are you searching for the best things to do on Hvar? Croatia’s sunniest island has so much to offer travelers, from exciting nightlife, to fascinating history, to swanky beach clubs, to the beautiful Hvar fortress. One of the biggest disappointments during our time in Hvar was that we had to forfeit our plan of visiting the islands. Unfortunately, it was raining on the morning we were supposed to venture out and the boats were on hold due to impending thunderstorms.

In any case, you may actually recognize the islands from earlier in this guide, as you can see them off in the distance from atop Trdava Fortica.

Although there are a total of 14 islands/islets, Sveti Klement (the locale of Palmižana Bay), Marinkovac, and Jerolim tend to be the most popular.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the three main islands:
  • Sveti Klement – This is the largest and arguably most popular of the Pakleni islands. It’s the locale of Palmižana Bay and the place to be if you’re after beach bars, water activities, and a lively environment.
  • Marinkovac – The beloved Marinkovac is a bit of a hybrid island. It offers both the stimulating party scene (like you’ll find at nudist-beach-by-day-and-nightclub-by-night Carpe Diem) as well as more secluded and quiet beaches. This island is home to the popular Antonio Patak Restaurant.
  • Jerolim – If you’re a nature enthusiast who prefers a quieter, more tranquil island experience, this beautifully rugged little island just may be the spot for you. That said, you’ll need to be comfortable with the full naturalist/nudist beach experience as well as be open to rocky beaches.

If you’re visiting the popular Palmižana on Sveti Klement and you feel like splurging, check out Laganini Lounge Bar. Here, you can rent a private waterfront booth for a whopping 400EUR or a beach table for two for 200EUR.

Alternatively, if the waterfront booth or table option is out of budget, you can make a reservation at their fish house restaurant.

We were actually planning to eat at Restaurant Antonio Patak on Marinkovac as I read great reviews, but unfortunately our plans were derailed, as I mentioned.

However, as a heads up, you may have some difficulty making a reservation here, as the person managing the email address is rather unresponsive. You may want to contact them directly via Instagram, as I received a response there.

What to Know Before You Go:

As you may well imagine, the Pakleni islands are only accessible by boat.

There are three main options for traveling by boat:

  1. Hire a water taxi
  2. Rent a private boat (this will require a boating license)
  3. Join an organized tour

Traveling by water taxi is the cheapest (and arguably easiest) experience, particularly if taking to the open waters is not something you’re accustomed to. You can either take a water taxi to Palmizana Bay (on Sveti Klement), to Mlini Beach/Zdrilca (on Marinkovac), or to Carpe Diem/Stipanska Beach (with a stop at Jerolim). Taxis tend to run every 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the time of year.

You can catch a water taxi outside of Mlinar Bakery located at Riva 5, 21450 in Hvar. Depending on the day/season, you may be able to purchase a ticket at a booth outside the bakery.

However, if this isn’t an option, you can also purchase your ticket on board.

Alternatively, if you’d prefer a guided experience, I recommend checking out some of these half-day and full-day tour options.

13. Hop Aboard a Speedboat Tour of the Green & Blue Caves

If the idea of exploring hidden beaches and natural wonders by boat sounds exciting, you should definitely consider taking a tour to the island’s incredible caves. The infamous Green Cave is located on the small island of Ravnik, neighboring the Croatian island of Vis. The Blue Cave is located on Biševo island.

Since these world-famous caves can be tricky to navigate without the help of an experienced guide, the best way to visit is on a tour. You’ll enjoy a comfortable ride aboard a speedboat and have the chance to swim, snorkel, take photos, and explore these natural wonders under the direction of a knowledgeable guide.

Did I mention that you can also witness a magical glowing light from within the caves? This is surely an experience you won’t soon forget.

14. Uncover the Past at an Abandoned Village

While trendy Hvar Town may seem polished and resort-like on the surface, you may be surprised to know that the island is actually home to an abandoned village!

Located six kilometers outside of Hvar Town, this ethno-eco village was abandoned in the 1950s. It was at this time when the locals fled to Milna for better financial opportunities and a richer quality of life.

However, despite the abandonment, a small family home and restaurant remain. These treasured remains provide a fascinating look into the authentic and local Dalmatia lifestyle.

15. Enjoy the Beautiful Aroma at a Lavender Field

Did you know that Hvar is home to numerous lavender fields? In fact, it’s often referred to as the Island of Lavender!

FUN FACT: In addition to cultivating lavender for its beautiful fragrance, the flower’s distinct flavor is used in a variety of culinary dishes.

The best places to locate lavender fields are generally:

In addition, the island also holds an annual lavender festival during July!

What to Know Before You Go:

While you may be tempted to book the next flight to Croatia and hop aboard the quickest ferry to Hvar, do keep in mind that lavender season is exactly that: seasonal. Lavender plants tend to flower between May and June/July, with peak bloom falling somewhere around mid-June. That said, the majority of lavender is typically harvested in late July.

Since Mother Nature can be a fickle one, the timing can vary depending on things like rainfall and sun, which can be unpredictable.

In addition to working around the timing, you’ll definitely want to have a car if you’re planning to visit some lavender fields.

16. Rent a Boat to Explore the Island

If you have an independent streak or simply don’t want to be beholden to limited taxi boat schedules, consider renting your own boat.

While you’ll need a license in order to rent a larger boat, smaller motor boats sometimes won’t require one. (Translation: The people renting out boats often won’t ask for a license. However, you’re technically supposed to have one.)

Do keep in mind that operating a boat without a license is something of a risk, since the only boat you can legally rent license-free in Croatia is a rowboat.

Personally, I recommend getting a license to play it safe. Keep in mind that you may be able to obtain a valid license from your home country, but you’ll need to check that. You can learn more about obtaining a boat license in Croatia here.

Alternatively, to avoid the hassle of getting licensed, you may also wish to hire a private skipper.

17. Venture to Jelsa

If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Hvar Town, you can find a more laidback environment in Jelsa. Hugging the northern coast in the center of the island, Jelsa is a charming little harbor town with a rugged coastline.

It’s located just under 15 minutes by car from Stari Grad. You could definitely group these charming towns together and hit them both in a day if you wanted.

Fun Things to Do in Jelsa:
  • Swim in St. Luke’s Bay (a.k.a Crikvica)
  • Explore Old Jelsa City
  • Witness the archaeological wonder of Grapčeva Cave
  • Visit the Greek fortress of Tor
  • Enjoy fun nightlife at Tarantela

I hope that this guide to the top things to do on Hvar has convinced you to add this gorgeous Adriatic island to your Croatia itinerary.

Personally, I’m glad I didn’t write it off as a party island because I would’ve missed out on so many of the hidden gems that aren’t discussed nearly enough!

Fun Things to Do on Hvar (within Hvar Town)

1. Explore St. Stephen’s Square

St. Stephen’s Square, also known as Pjaca, is one of the most iconic landmarks in Hvar Town.
