I’ll be honest with you. I obsessed over writing this post for about two weeks. Not because it was a departure from posting about Greece (in fact, that’s something I’m actively moving toward), but because I sincerely didn’t know what to write that would be worth reading. I wanted to provide compelling reasons to come here outside of what you would typically expect.
Full disclosure: Athens wasn’t what I was expecting. There, I said it.
Frankly, it had been so completely hyped up that when I got there, I found myself asking: “This is it?”
In all fairness, I had just come down from the high of Santorini, admittedly a tough act to follow.
But just the same, it took a little more digging around to understand what the appeal of Athens was all about.
There’s nothing like traveling – especially to the Mediterranean – to remind you to slow down and enjoy eating.
For many, this will not be groundbreaking.
In fact, plenty of people already enjoy food on a daily basis, never feeling the need to go overseas for it.
I am not one of those people.
That’s not to say that I went to Greece to learn to appreciate food – it wasn’t even on my radar.
It’s not hard to see why thousands of tourists flock to Santorini each year. This famous Greek island is known for its charming, picturesque towns, breathtaking views, and stunning sunsets.
However, due to the island’s immense popularity, Santorini can become incredibly crowded, particularly in the high season (June – August). This can make booking accommodations difficult – especially if you want to avoid the throngs of tourists.
Ah, Mykonos. The island that never sleeps.
“Last call” is an enigma to the Mykonos crowd, and while most neighborhood bars go dark at about 2AM, Mykonos is just getting started.
But even if you’re not the type to dance (on table tops or otherwise) until dawn, there are plenty of other reasons to fall in love with this magical island.
On August 19th, I married the love of my life at Onteora Mountain House in the beautiful Catskill Mountains.
Two days later, we embarked on the most amazing trip of my life, thanks to Petros Zissimos of Hellenic Holidays. That’s right, marital bliss led me to honeymoon heaven in gorgeous Greece, a.k.a my new favorite place on earth.
