Fortunately, after exploring the island from top to bottom (thanks to hubby driving all over Tenerife), I’ve compiled this guide to help you figure out exactly where to stay in Tenerife.

So if you’re seeking natural beauty, proximity to top attractions, or authentic Canarian culture, this neighborhood guide has you covered!

With the island’s numerous microclimates and varied landscapes, there’s a wide range of neighborhoods – and accompanying accommodations – to choose from in Tenerife.

For instance, staying on the north versus south side of the island will offer a completely different travel experience.

Fortunately, whether you’re looking for traditional Canarian culture, a posh beachside resort, a peaceful seaside oasis, or something in between, you’ll find it here in Tenerife.

Here’s a look at the best places to stay in Tenerife, from the southwest to the northeast.

If you want to be right near the main action in the Costa Adeje – while still narrowly avoiding rowdy Playa de las Américas – Puerto Colon is a nice compromise. This popular portside area is just on the edge of Playa de las Américas, but it’s a step above as far as touristy areas go.

While the town itself is fairly small (with limited accommodations), it packs a big punch in terms of shops, restaurants, and overall amenities.

Yucca Park Duplex offers guests immaculate modern interiors without sacrificing on the comforts of home. This self-catering duplex offers the convenience of an in-unit washing machine as well as a dishwasher and oven in a modern kitchen.

Perhaps the highlight of this polished two-bedroom is that guests can enjoy the outdoor swimming pool year-round.

A fabulous mid-range hotel on a lively street, Flamingo Beach Mate is a great family-friendly option in Puerto Colon.

With spacious and modern apartments, two swimming pools (one for children), lovely ocean views, and a generous (and tasty!) breakfast buffet, I couldn’t have asked for a better stay in Tenerife South.

There’s also a fitness center as well as a modern outdoor garden.

If you’ll be traveling by car, contact the hotel in advance of your stay to reserve a parking spot, as parking is quite limited in the hotel’s underground garage.

• Newly-developed resort town with plenty of restaurants & shops
• Home to one of the most beautiful beaches in the Costa Adeje
• Top-notch beachside hotels & resorts

The Playa del Duque neighborhood (a.k.a “del Duque”) is home to the beautiful, Blue-Flag beach of the same name.

Here, you’ll find gorgeous – albeit pricey – resorts, many of which offer beachfront access.

That said, this town’s awesome amenities come at a price, so you should expect to pay top dollar if you stay in this area.

Nestled amidst dreamy, subtropical gardens, Bahia del Duque is the prime place to be if you want to enjoy easy access to beautiful, Blue-Flag Playa del Duque.

This luxurious property is home to a whopping five swimming pools and eight on-site restaurants – not to mention the tennis courts and aerobics classes!

All rooms include a balcony so that guests can soak up luxury life in Tenerife, whether that’s from a spacious double room or a full-fledged villa.

Another fabulous mid-range-to-luxury option with close access to Playa del Duque is modern Hotel Baobab Suites. 

An easy, 10-minute walk from the beach, the well-equipped suites offer modern kitchens and washing machines as well as a delicious breakfast buffet included in the cost.

There are also two heated outdoor pools for year-round sunbathing and soaking.

• Several golden sand beaches (like Playa de los Cristianos and Playa de las Vistas), a rarity on this volcanic island

Sandwiched between the Chayofita and Guaza mountains, the popular resort town of Los Cristianos is located along the Costa Adeje.

This former traditional fishing village became increasingly popular in the 1970s, and is now one of the most highly-touristed spots on the island. Los Cristianos offers the perfect mix of lively and laidback, making it perfect for families (especially those visiting Tenerife with a toddler) and singles/couples alike.

If you love to shop ‘till you drop, you’ll be right at home here, as Los Cristianos is the largest shopping center on the south side of the island.

Located in the epicenter of Los Cristianos, Ocean Walk Modern Holiday Apartment offers spacious and modern apartments with fully-equipped kitchens, a washing machine, and a balcony.

There’s also an outdoor swimming pool as well as sunbeds (for an additional fee).

This holiday apartment may require a multi-night stay, so be sure to check that when booking.

Are you looking for a mid-range property along the Costa Adeje with views of Mount Tiede? Fortunately, you can have the best of both worlds at Paradise Park Fun Lifestyle Hotel in Los Cristianos.

This property offers an impressive range of places to soak, including five swimming pools and four jacuzzis at a very reasonable rate, especially for this popular area.

Paradise Park also includes a restaurant, sauna, and a modest fitness center.

For a budget accommodation, Klayman Olivina Aparthotel has a lot to offer.

The most notable feature is its open-air heated swimming pool, featuring beautiful views over Los Cristianos.

• Ideal for watersports like windsurfing & kitesurfing
• Artsy & boho shops featuring handmade treasures

Another former fishing village, sleepy El Médano is a great option for those seeking a laidback holiday (with plenty of time for watersports!) along the shore.

A far cry from rowdy Playa de Las Américas (which you won’t see promoted on this list), El Médano is a resort in its own right, but a much more unassuming one. Here, you’ll find plenty of surf shops, boutique stores selling bohemian gems, and a robust Saturday market with street performers and authentic local offerings.

Just beware – it can get quite windy here, which is why it’s so popular amongst the surfer crowd!

Beachfront Edificio Los Martines offers beautiful views and an outdoor swimming pool for guests to enjoy year-round.

These self-catering apartments feature fully-equipped kitchens and a washing machine as well as a balcony.

Families traveling with children will love the on-site children’s playground.

Another great beachfront property with a year-round outdoor pool – at a lower price point – is Sunny Duplex Los Martines.

Guests can enjoy the convenience of a two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit as well as a fully-equipped kitchen and washing machine.

Playa Surf CBbC Hotel offers a seawater pool as well as a buffet and an à la carte restaurant.

Rooms here are simple and comfortable, and some include sea views.

My favorite town in all of Tenerife, Garachico has it all – stunning sea vistas, historic streets with colorful homes, charming squares, and tasty restaurants. As one of the oldest villages on the island of Tenerife, its historic architecture is impressively preserved.

Beyond Garachico’s idyllic streets, you’ll quickly discover that the village is surrounded by some of the most jaw-dropping views on the island. And trust me, as you ascend to the top, the seaside panoramas just keep getting better. In fact, they made the cut as some of the best views in Tenerife!

If you’re looking for a luxurious, self-catering oasis amidst a stunning garden while in Garachico, look no further than Finca Oasis Samuel.

This gorgeous, three-bedroom villa offers four bathrooms as well as a terrace and patio with a barbecue.

Guests can soak in the beautiful and intimate pool and take in the stunning view.

Hotel San Roque is a vibrant property located just a short walk from Garachico Beach.

This lovely, 18th-century villa features rooms with great character, from detailed ceilings to posh furniture.

Icod de los Vinos is perfect for those who don’t identify with the bathing-suit-clad tourists of the south and prefer a more relaxed holiday infused with history, nature, and local (wine) culture.

Spacious Casa Pedro features four bedrooms and two bathrooms within a charming vacation home.

This homey accommodation includes a fully-equipped kitchen, a washing machine, a barbeque, and a fireplace.

The town is largely under-the-radar as compared to others on this list, but it’s best known for stunning Playa de Las Teresitas, the most beautiful golden-sand beach in Tenerife.

Beyond the beach, San Andres is perfect for travelers looking for a more peaceful place to enjoy Tenerife without sacrificing beautiful views.

A luxury stay in San Andres is less about the furnishings and amenities and more about location. Apartment by the Sea offers a prime location for those seeking beach time.

This two-bedroom/two-bathroom apartment features a comfortable balcony with patio furniture and a pretty view of the ocean.

Teresitas Beach by Aguita Salada verges on luxury over mid-range pricing, but it’s all relative to the area. There aren’t many properties in San Andres, so that tends to drive prices up.

The former fishing village of Puerto de la Cruz is the modern-day cultural hub of Northern Tenerife. It’s a unique mash-up of natural beauty and man-made creations like Lago Martiánez (an open-air, salt-water swimming pool complex) and urban art.

While the city is one of the most significant tourist centers on the island, it’s still a far cry from the touristy Costa Adeje area.

Instead, the city is full of rich culture and character, from its historic squares to its traditional cuisine.

Puerto de la Cruz is also a fantastic base for exploring the northern half of the island. Not only does it have much to offer within its own right, but it’s also a great jumping off point for neighboring cities that are worth visiting.

A top-notch 5-star in Puerto de la Cruz, Hotel Botanico y Oriental Spa Garden is one of the most elite properties throughout the Canaries.

Set amidst lush gardens and featuring three outdoor pools and a spa with Turkish baths and a Japanese sauna, it’s easy to see why Hotel Botánico is amongst The Leading Hotels of the World.

Guests can enjoy an eclectic range of food here, from Spanish, to Asian, to Italian throughout the hotel’s four restaurants.

Casa Donald served as the perfect home-away-from-home during our stay in Tenerife.

This charming and traditional Canarian home features two bedrooms, a peaceful garden, and a hot tub. It also offers a fully-equipped kitchen and a washing machine.

Casa Donald is ideally located under 10 minutes walking distance from Jardin Botánico as well as a few minutes on foot from local shops and markets.

Historic Hotel Monopol offers Canarian charm on a budget in Puerto de la Cruz.

Featuring the original wooden balconies from when the property was once a dance hall, this property will transport you to the past with its historic and quirky details.

In addition, guests can enjoy a heated outdoor swimming pool, a sauna, and a palm-tree-laden courtyard in this charming oasis removed from the chaotic city.

Set amongst a valley of banana plantations, La Orotava is one of the oldest towns in the Canaries, dating back to the early 16th Century. Unsurprisingly, this city has earned the well-deserved title of a National Historic & Artistic Site, as the majority of its fine historical center is still intact today.

Finca Abejera is a gorgeous, sea- and mountain-view retreat in La Orotava.

This three-bedroom/two-bathroom villa offers a fully-equipped kitchen, a washing machine, a fireplace, and a barbecue.

It’s most well-known for its dramatic basalt slab that rises majestically out of the sea – easily one of the best views in Tenerife!

Beachfront Apartamento Acantilados is a luxurious, self-catering apartment facing the iconic Los Gigantes.

With a year-round outdoor swimming pool that overlooks the stunning rock formations and a fully-equipped kitchen, you may not wish to leave this gorgeous two-bedroom apartment.

Another option featuring an equally stunning view of Los Gigantes, Klayman Diamond Aparthotel offers modern, sea-view apartments.

El Ramonal Vacacional offers guests a peaceful stay with a garden.

This self-catering, three-bedroom/two-bathroom house includes a full kitchen, outdoor seating, and a hot tub.

Sunset by the Sea lives up to its title with its lovely seaside accommodation.
