FAQ for a Day Trip from Corfu to Albania

Is it Worth Going to Albania from Corfu?

Not only is Corfu worth visiting, but neighboring Albania is as well! So if you’re already planning a getaway to Corfu, Albania is a fantastic day trip option that’s well worth the trip.

In addition to the ease of travel from Corfu to Albania by high-speed ferry, it’s also much more convenient to access the Albanian Riviera this way than by flying into Tirana International Airport to the north.

How Long Is the Ferry Ride from Corfu to Albania?

If you’re traveling as a foot passenger on a high-speed hydrofoil, you’ll enjoy a fast ride of just 30 minutes to Saranda, Albania.

Alternatively, if you’re traveling with a vehicle aboard a car ferry, the journey takes approximately one hour and 20 minutes.

How Do You Cross from Corfu to Albania?

The best way to cross from Corfu to Albania is by high-speed hydrofoil. This will take you to Saranda along the Albanian Riviera. Do keep in mind that you’ll need to pass through customs upon departure and arrival.

Is Corfu in Albania or Greece?

Romantic Corfu is a lush island located off of Greece’s northwest coast and one of the best Greek islands for couples. People often mistake Corfu for being part of Albania due to the neighboring country’s proximity to Greece.

Practical Information for Taking a Day Trip to Albania

Before we get into the nitty-gritty details of day-tripping to Albania – one of the cheapest countries to travel to – there’s something I want to address:

This post exclusively covers details for a day trip from Corfu to the Albanian Riviera. It will not include any suggestions for visiting Tirana or areas in Northern Albania.

In case you’re not already aware, the ferry from Corfu travels to the Albanian Riviera located in southwestern Albania on the coast of the Ionian Sea. (Since Corfu is one of the Ionian islands, it’s a perfect jumping off point for a day trip here.)

Now, a common point of contention about Albania is that there’s only one airport in the entire country, and it’s located in Tirana.

Unfortunately, the Riviera is far removed from the capital of Tirana, which is located in Central Albania. In fact, the drive between Saranda on the Albanian Riviera to Tirana can take anywhere from four to six hours, depending on the route. For this reason, it makes more sense to travel to the Albanian Riviera by ferry if you’re coming from Corfu.

If, however, you’re more interested in spending time in Albania’s capital, your best bet would be to fly into Tirana from Corfu (which would be more appropriate for an extended stay).

Alternatively, you could take a ferry from Corfu to Saranda and then drive up to Tirana, but again, this would only be appropriate for a longer stay due to the time commitment.

Regardless of what you decide, be sure to check out the best boutique hotels in Corfu town for your stay. This way, you can take advantage of easy access to the ferry terminal!

Now that we’ve gotten the particulars out of the way, lets discuss how you can get to the Albanian Riviera by high-speed hydrofoil or car ferry.

Getting from Corfu to Albania by High-Speed Hydrofoil

If you’re doing an Albania day trip from Corfu, you’ll travel by sea. The vessel you’ll need to catch will depend on whether or not you’re traveling with a vehicle.

If you’re traveling without a car as a foot passenger, you’ll purchase tickets for a high-speed hydrofoil. This will get you to Saranda, Albania in just 30 minutes.

This is what I did and what I’d suggest for a first-time traveler. I personally don’t think it’s necessary to have a car for your day trip, as you’ll be able to easily (and cheaply) get around by bus once in Saranda.

There are two main companies that operate a high-speed hydrofoil: Finikas Lines and Ionian Seaways. I rode Finikas Lines and enjoyed a quick and easy journey of just 30 minutes. You can check out the current ferry schedules here.

Alternatively, if you’re planning to stay longer than a day and/or hoping to visit multiple locations in a single day, it would probably be better to rent a car and take the car ferry instead.

What to Know Before You Go

First off, Corfu has two ferry terminals. One is for domestic destinations (such as to Paxos and Antipaxos from Corfu). The other is an international terminal. You’ll be departing Corfu from the international terminal for your day trip to Albania.

If you’re traveling from Corfu to Albania on Finikas Lines (which I suggest), you’ll need to pick up your ferry tickets at 1, Ethnikis Antistaseos Street 49100 in Corfu. From there, you can scan the QR code at the Finikas Lines ticket office for Google Maps directions to the international ferry terminal.

I suggest picking up your ferry tickets at least one day prior to your day trip and then creating a pin in Google Maps to save the address. (For reference, the address for the Corfu Port Authority is Eth. Antistaseos 24, Kerkira 491 00, which is where you’ll catch the ferry to Saranda.)

Something that no one seems to mention is where you actually catch the high-speed hydrofoil to Saranda. After you arrive at the ferry terminal, you’ll notice a number of different boats lining up along the port. However, these boats are traveling to domestic destinations in Greece, not Albania!

I made the mistake of standing in line for a boat going somewhere in Greece and wasted about half an hour, as there were no signs or instructions otherwise.

If you’re traveling to Saranda, you’ll need to go inside the Corfu Port Authority building, a large, coral-colored building.  You’ll find it behind the gate located along the port. This is where you’ll be instructed to go through customs in order to board.

Once you arrive in Saranda, you’ll once again need to go through customs. The building for this is pink and will be right at the dock where your ferry lets you off.

Did you know you that can travel from Corfu to Albania by ferry in just 30 minutes? Here’s what you need for an unforgettable day trip. #albanianriviera #ksamil #corfudaytrips

In fact, you’ll actually need to pass through customs a total of four times for a day trip – once to leave Corfu, once to enter Albania, again to leave Albania, and one final time to re-enter Corfu.

Key tips for traveling from Corfu to Albania by high-speed hydrofoil:
  • Bring your passport – Although it probably sounds obvious, you may forget this important step amidst planning the details of your day trip. Since you’ll be entering a new country (Albania) from Corfu, Greece, you’ll need to pass through customs, which requires you to have a valid, up-to-date passport.
  • Purchase your ferry ticket in advance – This is especially important if you’re taking an early morning ferry, as the ticket office may not be open before you’re expected to arrive at the port. While you can order your ticket online up to four hours before departure (I booked mine days in advance), you currently need to go to the physical ticketing office to pick it up in person.
  • Arrive to the port an hour early – As stated on your ticket, you’re expected to arrive one hour prior to your departure time. Though this may seem excessive, trust me when I say, you’ll want to abide. For one, you’ll need time to go through customs. In addition, ferries do occasionally depart a bit earlier than the stated ticket time. For instance, I purchased a ticket for the 9AM ferry, but it left closer to 8:50AM, so I was relieved that I built in that additional time.

Getting from Corfu to Albania by Car Ferry

If you’re traveling with a vehicle to Saranda, you’ll need to catch a car ferry from the Corfu ferry port instead. The main car ferry is operated by Joy Lines and the travel time is about one hour and 20 minutes from Corfu to Saranda.

These boats are much larger than the hydrofoils and can hold up to 250 people and ten vehicles. In addition, it costs more to travel by car ferry.

You can check out the ferry timetable and pricing here.

Getting Around Albania by Public Bus

One of the absolute best parts about getting around the Albanian Riviera is the easy-to-navigate (and cheap!) bus system. In fact, for the equivalent of just a couple of American bucks, you can travel to some of the most up-and-coming beach destinations along the Mediterranean!

Did you know you that can travel from Corfu to Albania by ferry in just 30 minutes? Here’s what you need for an unforgettable day trip. #albanianriviera #ksamil #corfudaytrips

PRO TIP: There’s a cash exchange place with zero fees located along the same street as the Saranda ferry terminal! Be sure to stop in here once you arrive in Saranda and exchange some of your money for Albanian Lek to ride the bus.

Once you have some Albanian Lek for the bus, you’re going to keep an eye out for buses that are traveling to Butrint (final stop). Look for signs posted for “Sarande – Ksamil – Butrint” in the bus windows.

I recommend getting off in Ksamil if you’re interested in an energetic atmosphere with beautiful beaches. In fact, I recommend this very spot for a European babymoon if you’re seeking a beach-focused getaway. (I personally didn’t make it to Butrint on my day trip, but I’ve heard great things.)

There are several bus stops located along the street perpendicular to the ferry terminal.

Alternatively, you may wish to stay put in Saranda when you arrive. The ferry terminal is located along a pretty relaxed beach, so you could foreseeably drop a towel and chill here for the day if you’re not up for exploring.

Getting from Corfu to Albania by Organized Tour

If you’d prefer to forego the hassle of figuring out transportation details and planning a day trip itinerary on your own, an organized tour is a great alternative.

There are a couple of different options to consider, each offering a slightly different glimpse into the beautiful country of Albania. Whether you’re interested in beautiful beaches, historical ruins, or a combination, there’s a fun organized tour waiting for you!

Top Beaches to Visit in Ksamil

If you’re heading to the Albanian Riviera for the beach vibe like I was, you have to visit the village of Ksamil. You’ll discover some of the most incredible turquoise blue water here.

In a totally out-of-character moment, I actually hopped on a bus from Saranda with the intention of going to the “Ksamil stop” but not much else planned. What I didn’t realize at the time is that there’s more than one Ksamil stop! In fact, the bus lets passengers off at a variety of different beaches in the town.

Out of pure luck, I picked the second (or third?) Ksamil stop, as that seemed to be where the majority of passengers were getting off. Well, I was definitely not disappointed when I arrived at gorgeous Sunny Hill Beach!
