Before we dive into these charming stays in Old Quebec, I first want to provide you with a (literal) lay of the land. One of the most key aspects to consider when selecting from the available boutique hotels in Quebec City is the location.

First off, it’s important to understand that Old Quebec is divided into two distinct sections: the lower town (a.k.a  Basse-Ville) and the upper town (a.k.a Haute-Ville). These two areas are aptly named based on their relative locations to the St. Lawrence River. As you may imagine, the lower town is situated at the ground level (along the river), whereas the upper town sits above the river, overlooking it.

In essence, the “best” place to stay in Quebec City is subjective, and it will depend (in part) on whether you’d prefer to base yourself in the lower or upper town.

In order to travel from the lower town to the upper town, you’ll either need to make the steep climb to the top via a sloping street, by climbing towering steps (if they happen to be available), or by riding the funicular for a small fee.

Ideally, you’ll want to visit both the upper and lower towns during your trip. However, if you have limited mobility and/or climbing is out of the question but you don’t necessarily feel comfortable riding the funicular, you’ll want to carefully consider your hotel choice relative to your desired activities.

I’ve included some highlights of the lower town and the upper town as a quick reference point.

Regardless of which section of the city you ultimately decide on, you’re sure to have a wonderful visit to Quebec City. That said, your chosen location will impact your trip, so it’s something you’ll want to give thought to before booking.

I’ve indicated whether each of the properties in this guide are in the lower town or the upper town to help make your decision easier.

I was so happy to discover Auberge Saint-Pierre for our Quebec City getaway. As one of the most centrally-located boutique hotels in Old Quebec, it not only lived up to my expectations, but managed to surpass them.

First off, the location really cannot be beat. Situated in a 19th-century heritage building on a quiet street in the lower town of Old Quebec, Auberge Saint Pierre is literally a 3-minute walk to Place Royale (if that).

This convenient locale – which is right in the heart of the Old Port – made getting to and from the central city a cinch. This was particularly beneficial in the morning, when I wanted to create content before the crowds. The hotel is also just across the street from the popular Musée de la civilisation, if you’re looking for a fun indoor activity.

When you enter, you may be pleasantly surprised by the unexpectedly spacious lobby area – it’s quite an impressive space with many comfortable seating areas.

We also loved our cozy room here – particularly the unique gold detailing and the décor.

Side Note: I don’t normally gush about hotel soap, but the body wash here is simply divine! You’ll be spoiled with L’Occitane, the renowned French-beauty brand. While the shower space itself is modest (think Parisian shower), the smell and feel of the body wash is so refreshing!

Auberge Saint-Pierre is also quite reasonably priced for what you get, particularly considering that you can help yourself to complimentary coffee, espresso, tea, and hot chocolate from the Espresso Lounge at all hours of the day and night.

(P.S. Tea time quickly became a nightly habit here and I may have taken a few of the fabulous chamomile tea bags home with me…)

In addition to hot beverages, the hotel also serves breakfast (for an additional fee) in Salon Estebe, the breakfast lounge.

There is also Il Matto, the property’s top-rated Italian restaurant located within Hotel 71 (the adjoining hotel).

However, do keep in mind that the breakfast locale will all depend on the current status of the evil “C-virus-which-shall-not-be-named.” During “normal” times, breakfast will be served in Salon Estebe from 7AM – 10AM on weekdays and from 7:30AM – 11AM on weekends.

Alternatively, in the case of rising numbers/other C-word-related complications, breakfast will be delivered in lunchboxes directly to the room (for an additional fee). You can square this away with the front desk at check-in.

Unfortunately, since the hotel was exclusively serving “lunchbox” breakfasts during our visit, my husband and I opted to eat at a nearby café. (Speaking of, be sure to stay tuned for my recommendations on the top cafes and eateries in the area!)

Oh, and did I mention that Auberge Saint-Pierre also has its very own serve-yourself wine bar in the lobby? How cool is that?!

Anytime you have a hankering for some wine, you can come downstairs, select your favorite variety, and the charge will be added to your hotel bill.

Auberge Saint-Pierre also includes a relaxing library space for those looking to unwind after a busy day or curl up with a good book on a rainy day.

Since Auberge Saint-Pierre is located on a busy street, there’s no guest parking lot directly at the hotel itself. Instead, you’ll be directed to a nearby public lot one block east, across from the Musée de la civilisation. Parking is available by the hour with daily rates between $20 – $40 USD.

Alternatively, the hotel offers a valet service, if that’s more conducive to your needs.

Personally, I don’t think the valet is really worth it and my husband and I had no issues accessing our car from the public lot. That said, it may come in handy in a pinch.

Auberge Saint-Pierre is technically located at 79 Rue Saint-Pierre, Québec, QC G1K 4A3.

However, the entrance can be a bit confusing, as you’ll actually need to access the property by entering Hotel 71, located at 71 Rue Saint-Pierre. The reason for this is that the two properties are co-joined, with the main lobby in the center.

After you check in, you’ll make a right off of the lobby. Here, you’ll find the Espresso Lounge and some other shared spaces that will lead you to the elevator and stairs up to Auberge Saint-Pierre. (Alternatively, Hotel 71 is located off to the left of the lobby).

If you’re a lover of French Art Deco but you don’t want to break the bank with your stay, then Hotel Manoir D’Auteuil just might be your idea of one of the best boutique hotels in Quebec City.

Located just under a 10-minute walk from the Quebec City Convention Center, Hotel Manoir D’Auteuil offers a rare blend of old-world charm, Art-Deco sensibilities, and contemporary elements.

Since 1953, this charming 3-star hotel has been welcoming guests into its 33 rooms and historic junior suites, from petite, European-style rooms to a unique chapel room that was formerly a chapel space!

Hotel Manoir D’Auteuil conveniently offers breakfast, drinks, and snacks in its lounge area for an additional fee. In addition, complimentary coffee and tea is also available from 7AM – 11PM in the lounge.

Guests can also take advantage of an intimate courtyard and garden area, perfect for relaxing outdoors.

Hotel Manoir D’Auteuil is located at 49 Rue D’Auteuil, G1R 4C2 Quebec City.

Hôtel Château Bellevue is unique in that it’s actually a cluster of four houses that are each 400 years old! So if historic, pet-friendly properties are of interest, you’ll definitely want to consider a stay here.

Located just across from the Governors Park and a several-minute walk to the iconic Château Frontenac in the upper town, Hôtel Château Bellevue looks as though it was imported straight from Europe with its charming façade.

Inside, you’ll find that the property focuses on sustainable practices, as evidenced by its energy-saving measures, numerous eco-friendly events, Adopt a Habitat Foundation, and 4 “Green Keys” program. 

Rooms are petite with fine details like leather furniture.  Several of them also offer the charm of exposed brick.

A continental buffet breakfast is also available to guests at an additional fee.

Valet parking is also offered, but subject to availability.

Hôtel Château Bellevue is located at 16 Rue de la Porte, G1R 4M9.

Auberge Place d’Armes enjoys a privileged position at the corner of the city’s two exclusive pedestrian-only streets.

Auberge Place d’Armes features charming and cozy rooms named after historic icons, including Marie Antoinette, Samuel de Champlain, and Lord Dufferin, to name a few. Four of the spaces are located in the attic for a truly unique and enjoyable stay.

The hotel is also home to Le Pain Béni, a restaurant offering à la carte breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Auberge Place d’Armes is located at 24 Rue Saint-Anne, G1R 3X3 Quebec City.

How would you like to sleep in a former monastery that places an emphasis on holistic health? If the thought sounds appealing, consider a stay at Le Monastère des Augustines, a 17th-century-monastery-turned-health-focused-hotel.

While the property has been masterfully updated with modern touches and a unique approach to wellness, it still retains its former character and charm, making for a totally unique stay.

Ideal for those seeking a “holistic hotel experience,” Le Monastère des Augustines maintains strong ties to its founding Augustinian sisters, who developed a dozen hospitals that remain in Quebec’s public healthcare system today.

In addition to its status as a now modern-day hotel, the property is, above all, a health and wellness center, offering everything from therapeutic massages, to guided meditations, to holistic health consultations.

The hotel has a total of 65 rooms and features two distinct room types – authentic and contemporary – which are available in its updated former cloister.

The 33 authentic rooms retain much of the former property’s original character, featuring antique furniture and shared bathrooms.

On the other hand, the 32 contemporary rooms offer bright, airy spaces with modern conveniences and private bathrooms.

Le Monastère des Augustines is also home to Le Vivoir, a restaurant that emphasizes mindful eating. The property’s farm-fresh and seasonal menu features a range of vegetarian dishes, fish plates, and meat-based meals.

In an effort to provide a tranquil space for all guests, Le Monastère des Augustines does not provide phones or televisions in any of the individual rooms.

However, there are public computers in the main living area and WiFi is freely available throughout the hotel for all guests.

Le Monastère des Augustines is located at 77 Rue des Ramparts, G1R 0C3 Quebec City.

History buffs won’t be able to resist a stay at Hôtel Le Priori, located on one of North America’s oldest and most historic streets.

The interior is just as lovely as the gorgeous exterior, and each of the 28 cozy rooms feature exposed brick and Art-Deco-style furniture.

Hotel guests can also enjoy relaxing in the lovely outdoor courtyard space.

Hôtel Le Priori provides a cold, self-service buffet breakfast from 7AM – 10:30AM on weekdays (7:30AM on weekends).

While Hôtel Le Priori doesn’t provide valet parking, they do offer a self-parking lot about 0.2 miles from the property. Guests wishing to access this lot will need to retrieve a parking card from the front desk upon arrival. Parking is available at CAD 17 per night plus tax.

Hôtel Le Priori is located at 15 Rue Sault-au-Matelot, G1K 3Y7 Quebec City.

If you’d prefer to stay in a lively setting adjacent to numerous shops and restaurants, you may want to consider Hôtel du Vieux-Québec in the upper town.

This carbon-neutral hotel prides itself on sustainable practices – such as the usage of solar energy – and is the recipient of numerous environmental awards.

The 45 rooms and 5 apartments at Hôtel du Vieux-Québec are spread amongst four floors. Each includes contemporary décor and many feature exposed brick.

The hotel also includes a gourmet restaurant, Bistro Tournebroche. It features organic food and is located at the ground level.

In addition, an in-room breakfast may be provided upon request.

While both self-parking and valet service are unfortunately not offered at Hôtel du Vieux-Québec, there is an underground public lot within easy walking distance that the hotel can direct you to.

Hôtel du Vieux-Québec is located at 1190 Rue Saint-Jean, G1R 1S6 Quebec City.

While this next property is more of a self-catering apartment experience than a hotel, it definitely deserves a place on this list.

Dating back to 1899, L’Adresse sur Grande-Allée Lofts have been beautifully renovated to provide a more luxurious experience for guests.

While these 14 self-catering apartments have been updated with contemporary design elements, they still retain their charming architectural components.

Although there’s no restaurant, the well-furnished lofts come with everything you’d need to prepare your meals, including a stove, a microwave oven, a refrigerator, and even a dishwasher.

L’Adresse sur Grande-Allée Lofts offers guests the added convenience of private parking right behind the property, a rarity in Quebec City.

L’Adresse sur Grande-Allée Lofts are located at 401 Grande Allée Est, G1R 2J5 Quebec City.

Located in a charming 19th–century building, Hotel Manoir Vieux-Quebec is a contemporary hotel housed within a historic façade. Although it was renovated in 2020 to provide the best possible experience for guests, its heritage status was still carefully kept intact.

Within easy walking distance of the famous Château Frontenac (only 150 feet away, to be exact), the location is ideal for a stay in Quebec City’s upper town.

The 46 rooms of the hotel are available in a wide range of sizes to suit all comfort levels, from the economical queen room to apartments that accommodate up to six.

Beyond the contemporary rooms, the hotel is also home to a fantastic rooftop terrace with panoramic views over Château Frontenac and the St. Lawrence River.

There’s also a hot tub and a gym on-site.

While the hotel doesn’t have its own parking, the staff will be happy to direct you to the nearest lot upon arrival.

Hotel Manoir Vieux-Quebec is located at 6 Rue de la Porte, G1R 4M9 Quebec City.

If you can’t decide between a historic and contemporary hotel style, you don’t have to at C3 – Hotel Art De Vivre! Instead, this creatively-designed hotel merges elements from its humble, 1852 beginnings with those of today to give you the best of both worlds.

Located at the corner of the beautiful Cartier Avenue and Grande-Allée, this property is appropriately located in Quebec City’s buzzing arts district.

With 24 invigorating rooms featuring fun pops of color and eye-catching designs, it’s the perfect place for creatives and/or those seeking inspiration on their travels.

The property also includes a rooftop terrace for guests to enjoy from June until September when the weather is inviting.

Faro Bar is perfect for enjoying a refreshing aperitif while watching the sun go down from the panoramic terrace.

C3 – Hotel Art De Vivre is located at 170 Grande Allée Ouest, G1R 2G9 Quebec City.

Located near the Morrin Centre, Les Lofts Ste-Anne are another wonderful self-catering option offering the luxe feeling of a hotel.

From open, airy rooms to a spacious penthouse suite that accommodates up to six travelers, Les Lofts Ste-Anne are like a luxurious home-away-from-home.

A convenient express check-in and check-out is available for all guests.

Paid parking is available nearby and you can inquire about this option during your check in.

Les Lofts Ste-Anne is located at 42 Rue Sainte-Anne, G1R 3X3 Quebec City.

Located right next to Auberge Saint-Pierre (the first hotel in this guide), Hotel 71 shares many of the same features as its adjacent neighbor. This includes everything from the lobby area, to the Espresso Lounge, to the wine and spirit dispenser.

In fact, think of this urban hotel like the upscale cousin of Auberge Saint-Pierre. It offers 60 rooms ranging from suites, to lofts, to a penthouse suite.

It’s also the location that houses the beloved Italian restaurant of Il Matto.

A valet parking service is available for an additional fee. Hotel 71 is also a pet-friendly property; just let the hotel know about your furry friend when you book.

Hotel 71 is located at 71 Rue St Pierre, G1K 4A4 Quebec City.

Referred to as a museum hotel for its archeological artifacts, the impressive Auberge Saint-Antoine Relais & Châteaux narrowly squeezes its way into boutique-hotel territory with its 95 luxurious rooms & suites.

If you’re looking to be pampered with heated floors, a private terrace, or even a fireplace in a custom-designed space, then this is the property for you.

Auberge Saint-Antoine Relais & Châteaux is also home to the exquisite Chez Muffy, a sustainable “farm-to-fork” establishment that’s easily one of the best restaurants in Old Quebec. It features seasonal French-Canadian fare as well as Bar Artifact, a chic cocktail bar.

Keep in mind that reservations are required for Chez Muffy.

This fabulous hotel also includes a fitness center featuring a yoga studio and a steam room, spa services, and an auditorium offering private movie screenings for events.

A true testament to its luxurious offerings, Auberge Saint-Antoine Relais & Châteaux provides guests with complimentary valet parking in their very own private lot.

In a century-old building (which is technically comprised of two buildings), you’ll find the lovely Hôtel Le Germain Québec. Fusing modern elements with traditional features, the property sits on a quiet and charming street.

The hotel features numerous amenities, including a 24-hour fitness center, a fireplace-clad lounge, and even in-room massages for those seeking the ultimate relaxation and privacy.

A continental breakfast is available to all guests for an additional fee. In addition, guests can enjoy free cappuccinos from the espresso bar.

The 60 rooms range from “classic” to “prestige” and all include a Nespresso machine with complimentary coffee pods.

Hôtel Le Germain Québec is proudly pet-friendly and a mandatory cleaning service applies for an additional $30 per stay.

Unsurprisingly, this hotel gem – which is dedicated exclusively to adults – is the perfect spot to escape on a couple’s getaway such as an anniversary, a honeymoon, or a relaxing winter retreat.

As to be expected, the 18 rooms retain all of the historic charm of their 400-year-old beginnings, from antique furniture, to four-poster beds, to wooden rafters.

Hotel Le Clos Saint-Louis is located at 69 Rue Saint-Louis, G1R 3Z2 Quebec City.

Located in the Saint-Jean Street district, elegant Monsieur Jean Hôtel Particulier prides itself on providing both the modern conveniences of a hotel with the comforts of home.

All 49 suites include a kitchenette, king bed, and heated tile floor in the bathroom. In addition, each comes with an electric tea pot and some include balconies with river views.

Private parking can be arranged with the hotel for an additional fee.

For all of the pet owners, Monsieur Jean Hôtel Particulier will gladly welcome four-legged friends for an additional $35 per day/per pet.

The aptly-named Hôtel Port-Royal is located in the heart of the Old Port of Quebec. With its ivy-clad façade and generous outdoor terrace area, it provides a welcoming environment.
