FAQ About Visiting Mallorca with a Baby

Is Mallorca Child-Friendly?

Child-friendly would be an understatement! I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many babies and toddlers in a two-block radius on my travels as I did while staying in Cala d’Or, one of the island’s most family-centric neighborhoods.

What to Do with Small Kids in Mallorca?

From water parks, to aquariums, to shallow sand beaches, to museums, to plentiful playgrounds and family-focused restaurants, there are so many activities, amenities, and attractions to suit small children on the island of Mallorca.

What Part of Mallorca Is Best for Families?

It’s hard to definitively say which part of Mallorca is best for families, as there are family-friendly neighborhoods in a variety of areas. For instance, if you’re looking to stay in the northern part of the island, Alcúdia and Port de Pollenca are great choices.

Alternatively, Cala d’Or in Southeastern Mallorca is a wonderful beach resort option on the opposite side of the island.

Is Mallorca Budget-Friendly?

Mallorca can be budget-friendly depending on how you plan your trip, but it’s not particularly known for being the most affordable destination, especially as it’s grown increasingly popular.

Hotels and resorts can often get pricey, particularly during the summer season, but you can travel in the shoulder season to enjoy some potential price breaks.

In addition, doing activities like visiting free beaches and playgrounds with the kids can also save you money versus the pricier attractions.

Can Babies Drink Tap Water in Mallorca?

While tap water is safe to drink in Mallorca, the distinct mineral taste may be different than what you and your little one are used to.

Ideally, I suggest buying bottled water for babies or small children, whether using it to mix with formula or giving it to them as is. Apparently, the island even sells bottled water specifically for mixing with formula – just look for the baby on the label!

Key Tips for Visiting Mallorca with a Baby

As it was our first time traveling abroad with our daughter, I was admittedly unsure what to expect.

That said, many, many people told me how baby-friendly Mallorca is (and how great Mallorca with kids is in general) and it honestly exceeded my expectations in that regard.

Here are some helpful tips to consider as you plan your trip to Mallorca with a baby:
  • Book your trip in the shoulder season – To beat the tourist crowds (and potentially enjoy reduced costs), your best bet is to avoid traveling to Mallorca in peak summer season. Instead, consider visiting anywhere from late April/early May through early June or late September into October. Shoulder season also offers more comfortable weather as compared to the summer heat, so your trip should be much more enjoyable. We traveled at the end of May leading into early June and it was absolutely beautiful.
  • Pack with beaches in mind – If you’re traveling with your baby to Mallorca outside of the winter time, you’ll definitely want to pack beach-appropriate attire and gear. Fortunately, I’ve already put together a beach packing list for your baby to ensure you don’t forget any of the essentials – and I’ve included some fun extras, too.
  • Consider renting baby gear in Mallorca – While you definitely want to be prepared when it comes to baby travel, you also want to avoid overpacking, as it can quickly become burdensome. Luckily, you can rent baby gear in Mallorca and save yourself the trouble of lugging extra stuff through the airport.
  • Know where to go for baby essentials – Along the lines of packing light, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with where you can buy key baby items while in Mallorca. For instance, you can always pick up baby necessities at an Eroski (the island’s main grocery chain), Lidl, or a general farmácia (for medicine, health-care products, etc.). Fun Fact: Dodot are the Spanish equivalent to Pampers!

  • Plan attractions around nap times – While this tip isn’t necessarily Mallorca-specific, it’s definitely worth mentioning. Consider the times of day when your baby typically naps and then try to schedule activities before or after those times. This will not only lead to less fussiness, but you’ll also get more bang for your buck if your child is energized and engaged during sightseeing time.
  • Find a family-centric neighborhood and accommodation – A family-friendly area and place to stay are key for a successful trip. Be sure to check out my companion guide to the best places to stay in Mallorca for families.
  • Understand the difference between a crib in America vs. Spain – If you’re accustomed to traveling with a baby in Europe, this may not be news to you, but as an American, it was definitely a learning curve for me. In Mallorca (and in Spain in general, from what I’ve heard), when a hotel offers to provide a “crib” for your baby, they’re actually referring to what we in the United States know as a “pack-and-play”. You should not expect an American “crib” in the standard sense (one with bars). Instead, think of it as a small play pen with netted sides. Another interesting difference we noted was that hotels tend to provide bed sheets, a comforter, and even a small pillow for the “crib”, whereas in the U.S., we tend to only use a single fitted sheet.

Top Things to Do in Mallorca with a Baby

Hit the Beach

Mallorca is home to plenty of stunning, family-friendly beaches, so you’ll certainly be spoiled for choice.

Plus, in addition to the sheer number of beaches on the island, there are different types of beaches depending on what part of the island you’re on.

For instance, Northern Mallorca is known for gorgeous long stretches of soft sandy beaches like Port de Pollenca.

Alternatively, Southeastern Mallorca is home to intimate, cove-like beaches like Cala Llombards.

We were fortunate to experience both styles of beach during our stay.

These were our three favorite family-friendly beaches in Mallorca:

  1. Cala Gran (cove-style beach with sandy center in Southeastern Mallorca)
  2. Cala Llombards (cove-style beach with sandy center in Southeastern Mallorca and one of the most popular beaches on the island)
  3. Port de Pollenca Beach (long sandy beach in Northern Mallorca)

For options beyond these three, I recommend checking out these family-friendly beaches in Mallorca.

Ride the Vintage Palma to Soller Train

Easily one of my top-favorite experiences in Mallorca was riding the vintage train to Soller with our little lady in tow.

Looking to visit Mallorca with a baby? Here’s everything you need to know for a family-friendly escape to this stunning Spanish island with a little one in tow! #mallorcawithkids #mallorcawithchildren #mallorcawithfamily

Just imagine rattling past sweeping mountains and fragrant citrus groves in an old-fashioned train from 1912 – certainly not your everyday attraction! This family-friendly excursion offers a fun train journey to the beautiful destination of Soller (and nearby Port de Soller via tram).

I’ve already compiled all of the key details for coordinating a memorable day trip on the vintage train from Palma to Soller, so be sure to check that out to help you plan!

Visit the Palma Aquarium

When it comes to visiting Mallorca with a baby, there’s no shortage of aquatic attractions to enjoy, starting with the popular Palma Aquarium.

As a lover of aquariums, I hope to check this one out on a future trip, as we didn’t end up spending much time in Palma (other than using it as the base for our train adventure). That said, it’s certainly one of the top attractions for families in Mallorca’s bustling capital city.

Beyond the many exciting exhibits, there’s also a children’s playground for little ones to burn off some energy.

You can check out aquarium hours and admission information here.

Make a Splash at a Waterpark

Speaking of aquatic attractions, Mallorca is home to not one, not two, but three family-friendly waterparks (plus an adults-only one at one of the resorts).

The three family-friendly waterparks in Mallorca include:

  1. Aqualand – One of Mallorca’s largest waterparks, Aqualand is located in El Arenal, a beachy area beloved by families. Little ones can enjoy Adventureland and Dragonland with kid-friendly slides and attractions.
  2. Western Waterpark – Located in Magaluf, Western Waterpark is decked out in a fun “Wild West” theme. It’s known for Kidworld, featuring mini parks like Coyote Park and Daky Park with paddling pools, age-appropriate slides, and more.
  3. Hidropark – Located in the Port d’Alcúdia, Hidropark is the sole water park in the northern part of the island. Despite being the smallest of the three family-friendly options, it offers additional fun beyond water slides, including mini golf, paint ball, and trampolines.

Check Out a Museum

Mallorca is not only great in the general museum department, it also has a number of family-friendly museums to explore.

Here are three popular museums for families in Mallorca:

  1. Maritime Museum – With locations in both Palma and Soller, the Maritime Museum is a wonderful introduction to Mallorca’s interesting maritime history, offering everything from fun tales of life at sea to shipwrecks and lighthouses.
  2. The Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation – Located in Palma and dedicated to Spanish painter and sculptor Joan Miró, children are encouraged to explore his life through both indoor and outdoor activities, from educational workshops to a natural playground merging art with nature.
  3. Es Baulard – Also located in Palma, Es Baulard is a beautiful modern-day art gallery featuring contemporary works.

Explore an Underground World at Drach Caves

Located along the eastern coast of Mallorca in Porto Cristo, Drach Caves is one of the top attractions to enjoy in Mallorca.

Spoiler Alert: The Drach caves are worth visiting with kids, too!

FUN FACT: Drach Caves hide Lake Martel, one of the world’s largest underground lakes.

Translated to “Dragon Caves” in Spanish, Drach Caves consist of four impressive and interconnected natural caves – the Black Cave, the White Cave, the Cave of Luis Salvador, and the Cave of the French – that extend 1200 meters long and 25 meters deep.

The highlight of this exciting underground experience is the live music concert on Lake Martel! After this, you’ll have the option to cross over the lake via boat.

If you’re visiting the cave with a baby, you can either wear your little one in a carrier or carry them around, as you won’t be able to use a stroller.

Where to Stay in Mallorca with a Baby

Given Mallorca’s family-friendly atmosphere, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding an accommodation to suit your little one. That said, there are definitely some neighborhoods that are more catered toward families than others.
